Thomas T. Fauntleroy was born in Winchester, Virginia, on 1823-12-20. He was educated at Benjamin Hallowell High School in Alexandria and the University of Virginia, where he graduated with the law class of 1844. In 1847, he began private practice in Winchester and in 1850 was elected Commonwealth's Attorney in Frederick County. A little later, he was elected to the legislature, and then served in the military during the war. His health was not good after the war but he resumed practice and again represented Frederick County in the legislature. In 1879 he became the Secretary of the Commonwealth and, in 1883, was elected to the Supreme Court of Appeals. He remained a judge on this court for eleven years, until his death in 1894.
