Tom Playford is the son of former Premier Sir Thomas Playford, a Baptist minister, and an aspiring South Australian politician.

As an independent in the 2002 elections for Kavel he received 18.7% of the vote and was 3% away from taking the Liberal-held seat after distribution of preferences.

He was a candidate in the 2006 South Australian Election for the Family First Party in the Electoral district of Kavel, winning 15.7% of the vote.
