[edit] Information
Thomas Haney Secondary School follows the Self-Directed Model and is currently part of The Canadian Coalition for Self-Directed Learning– THSS is one of the most distinctive schools in Canada. At Thomas Haney students may choose to recreate their courses entirely on the provincial learning outcomes, or they may follow ‘Learning Guides’ which were designed by the Thomas Haney Teachers. In the recent years a shift towards traditional structure has been seen. Administrators believe that with support, accelerated learning can enhance the education of some students; although it has been proven that others struggle with a non-traditional program, and may take additional time to finish. Motivation is the key to the success of the student. Classes have been redesigned to a part-time basis, allowing the student to work independently between ‘seminars’ (classes).
Thomas Haney has had a history of distinctive programs that have been made available for the students. The latest program, known as Connections, is exemplary of Thomas Haney tradition. A senior class incorporating, Biology 11, English 11, and Law 12, its primary goal is to establish a "real world" approach to these subjects inside and outside of the classroom in a non-traditional setting. Additionally, the Moodle Project has become prominent in its approach to technology. Its goal is a CMS Website system to collaborate online resources with teachers and students.
