Captain Thomas Drummond (1797 - 1840) was a Scottish civil engineer, born in Edinburgh. Drummond was the inventor of the Drummond light which was employed in the trigonometrical survey of Great Britain and Ireland. A supporter of the Whigs, he helped with the work preparatory to the great Reform Bill of 1832 and he was later rewarded with the post of Irish Under-Secretary, a position he held from 1835 until his death in 1840. Drummond was held in high regard by Irish, whom he treated with impartiality.
