Thiruthuraipoondi is a city and a municipality in Thiruvarur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Thiruthuraipoondi is located 330 km south of Chennai, 40 km west of Nagappattinam and 65 km east of Thanjavur.

Thiruthuraipoondi is an Agricultural city located south of District Thiruvarur. It is covered more than 25 villages. Most people is agricultural. A Famous Temple pragatheeswara is locating center of the city. This temple is 200 years old. Satellite pictures and carbon dating of some ancient beaches between Thiruthuraipoondi and Kodiyakarai show the Thiruthuraipoondi beach dates back to 6,000 years and the Kodiyakarai beach to 1,100 years. In other words, the sea was near Thiruthuraipoondi 6,000 years ago and reached Kodiyakarai around 1,100 years ago.

Mr Thiruthuraipoondi Subramania Srinivasan better known as S.S. Vasan born here. He was Writer, journalist, magazine editor, publisher and movie maker. He founded the Gemini Studio in 1940, which was one of the most successful film production units. Vasan made blockbusters in Tamil, Telugu, and also Hindi. Vasan's memorable films include Mangamma Sabatham, Balanagamma, Chandralekha, Apoorva Sahotharargal, Vanjikottai valiban, Nishan, Gharana, Grihsati and Paigham. Chandralekha was his magnum opus, the film was shot for 5 years (1943-1948).

And A Famous Government Higher Secondary School is locating 1 km away from city. It was built by British Government in 1936. It is connecting to 5 major cities like Thiruvarur, Mannargudi, Pattukkottai, Nagapattinam and Vedaranyam.

Agriculture is the main occupation for people living in Thiruthuraipoondi and surrounding areas. Rice and dhal items grow here. The short term Kuruvai and long term Samba rice crops are cultivated depending on the water sources.

As of 2001 India census[2], Thiruthuraipoondi had a population of 22,905. Males (11,272) constitute 49% of the population and females (11,633) 51%. Thiruthuraipoondi has an average literacy rate of 74%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 79%, and female literacy is 70%. In Thiruthuraipoondi, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.
