Thirumangalam is located at 9.48° N 77.58° E[1]. It has an average elevation of 12 metres (39 feet). The town is situated on the banks of river Gundar, a distributary of river Vaigai.

As of 2001 India census[2], Thirumangalam had a population of 43,372. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Thirumangalam has an average literacy rate of 80%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 85%, and female literacy is 75%. In Thirumangalam, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The trial of the famous freedom fighter of south Veerapandia Kattabomman[1] case was onducted in Thirumangalam court and evantually he was hanged at Kayattar.

He is well known for his integrity and a son of Indian Freedom Fighter Mr.N.S.Veerpathira Thevar, a contemporar of Late Mr K.Kamaraj.
