Coordinates: 9°29′N 77°35′E / 9.48, 77.58 Thirumangalam is a city and a municipality in Madurai district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It has a small manufacturing and cottage industries.

Thirumangalam is located at 9.48° N 77.58° E[1]. It has an average elevation of 12 metres (39 feet). The town is situated on the banks of river Gundar, a distributary of river Vaigai.

As of 2001 India census[2], Thirumangalam had a population of 43,372. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Thirumangalam has an average literacy rate of 80%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 85%, and female literacy is 75%. In Thirumangalam, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The trial of the famous freedom fighter of south Veerapandia Kattabomman[1] case was onducted in Thirumangalam court and evantually he was hanged at Kayattar.

To add famous persons born in Tirumangalam, Mr N.S.V.CHITTHAN, a sitting Congress MP who is born in 12.4.1932 may be added.

He has been an MLA for about three terms and has been awarded for most number of questions asked in the Tamilnadu Assembly.

He has been elected as Lok Sabha MP from Dindigul constituency in 1996 Elections and now a sitting MP since 2004.

He is well known for his integrity and a son of Indian Freedom Fighter Mr.N.S.Veerpathira Thevar, a contemporar of Late Mr K.Kamaraj.
