Thirumalai is a Tamil film which released on Oct 24, 2003 and was directed by Ramana. This film has Vijay in the main lead. Jyothika plays his love and Kiran Rathod plays a guest role. This film was a huge success and ran for more than 125 days. Vijay's string of fast paced entertainers started with this one and was followed by Ghilli, Madhurey, Thirupaachi and Sivakasi. It was remade in Telugu as Gowri.

Thirumalai(Vijay), a mechanic, falls in love with Sweta(Jyothika) and after some persistent wooing, she reciprocates his feelings. Sweta's father(Ashwin), the owner of a television channel, seeks the help of Arasu(Manoj.K.Jayan), a dada, to break up the romance. This film had a kind of difference of the climax in the end

Originally, Namratha Shirodkar was selected as the heroine. They even started shooting. However, Ramana liked Jyothika better for this role.

Vijay has changed his get up in this role to be like a rowdy/mechanic and to give a younger look. This is his 2nd Movie Vijay has acted with Jyothika. This is Vijay's 2nd movie acting with Kousalya. However, Kouslaya is a side actress in this.
