Thiriyai (Tamil:திரியாய்) is a Tamil village in the Eastern Trincomalee District of Sri Lanka. It is situated about 25 miles north of Trincomalee town through Nilaveli. The name of the village is linked with `thiri' (In English-`wick'). Lotus stems were dried and used for making these wicks. These wicks then used with 'yaai' (In English - Cow's Ghee) to light lamps and worship God Shiva at well known Koneswaram temple in Trincomalee. Thiriyai is among the ancient Tamil villages of the district and had over 700 families.[1] But due to the ethnic conflict, most families fled the village and are now living elsewhere in the country or overseas.
