Thinning the Herd is a prolific New York City based psychedelic hard-rock band. The band consists of the core members Gavin Spielman on guitar/vocals, Richard Tapper on Bass. Gavin and Rich write all of the bands material. After some time Thinning the Herd became a 4 piece (R.Tapper on guitar, Gavin on vocals/guitar, Dan Kutcher (Jollyship Whizbang) and Dan Carillo (Westchester) on Drums. Settling on the classic power trio -- Dan Kutcher left the band in early 2008.
Thinning the Herd have shared the stage with Suicide City, Electric Frankenstein, Leviathan, Crackula, Elvis 77, Grande, Graveyard BBQ and Agent Orange as well as many others.

Thinning the Herd was formed in 2005. Gavin Spielman was painting and teaching at Parsons School of Design at the time when Richard Tapper e-mailed Gavin after seeing his fine-art listing on the internet. Tapper asked Gavin to play guitar in his band 5 Point Landing -- remembering he taught Tapper how to play Crazy Train in the tenth grade. After a few rehearsals Gavin asked Rich to start writing on Thursdays thus forming a new band they called Thinning the Herd.

Gavin and Rich were friends in high school. Richard helped Gavin after being jumped by a posse in Fort Greene Park. Gavin Spielman is also a prolific fine artist/teacher. Rich Tapper is a professional pro-tools engineer and has worked with Britney Spears and others.
