Thiago Alves Araujo (born October 3, 1983) is a Brazilian professional mixed martial arts fighter. Alves started training in Muay Thai when he was 15 and mixed martial arts at 17.[1] He is also a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
[edit] Ultimate Fighting Champsionship
He is currently a welterweight fighter in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, where, as of early 2008, he has compiled a record of 7-2. After his sixth fight for the UFC, a victory against Tony DeSouza, Alves tested positive for a diuretic, Spironolactone, which he supposedly used to lose water weight, in order to reach the 170-pound welterweight weight limit.[2] In his most recent fight, Alves beat former UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Hughes at UFC 85, although he failed to make weight.
Thiago is currently associated and trains with American Top Team.
