[edit] What does This Is Fake DIY mean?

What does This Is Fake DIY mean? I know that DIY is Do-It-Yourself, but what is fake do it yourself supposed to mean, and what has it got to do with music reviews? Is it just a stupid name that means nothing or am I missing something?--207.180.186.62 (talk) 03:44, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

I answered my own question (I think) because it’s the name of a song by an artist named Bis. So, I’m guessing that they got it from there. The song’s lyrics are about music releases that deliberately mimic the look associated with independant issues (low budget) to appeal to an audience but are actually just being carefully marketed by majors. I suppose that still doesn’t answer the question about why they named themselves for it. Are they trying to tell us something? ;O --207.180.186.62 (talk) 03:51, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

I have just been alerted to the discussions about this page! It's OK, I won't go editing it. In answer to the question above, the site was originally named 'Fake DIY' at the outset, also after the song, but we simply preferred it that way. The 'This Is' was only added in 2003/4 - owing to someone else nabbing the domain name (oh the naiveties of youth). Mind you, we prefer the full name. As to why it was chosen, we'd gone through the entire Blur back catalogue, and couldn't find anything: Popscene was/is already a pretty successful club night in San Francisco, for example, although we'd have considered that perfect. Stephen, a Bis fan in years gone by, went through their stuff and it just called out to us - they were a 'zine' band, and at the time, before we understood a lot about the structural design and running of a website, we were intending to simply re-create the idea of a photocopied zine on the net: as far as we knew, there wasn't anyone else doing that. This was back in September 2002, we didn't know of any similar-ish websites back then.

I do admit there's a kind of irony to the name, although I'd hope it's more to do with the likes of The Kooks, The Fratellis et al releasing vinyl and pretending to be indie whilst having the resources and input of a major label (read the lyrics, you'll see)!

I don't quite know about proper Wikipedia protocol, but feel free to contact me if you have any questions/need information/just want to pester me. I can message you my e-mail address if that's any more verifiable than this here! I can probably also find some links from outside sources referencing the website - I know the Guardian Guide wrote a lovely piece on us a fair few months back (it could be years, I don't quite remember), and The Fly featured us in their internet section; my Mum has that printed out on her fridge (!). - Emma DIY (sorry, I don't know how to sign this!) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Emma DIY (talk • contribs) 09:16, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
