Hello!

Test Wiki

Yeah - that's me. - Milks F'avorite Cookie 23:18, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Hey

How do you get that box at the top of your user page with all of the clickables?

IRC thanks

Thanks for helping on IRC - much appreciated! :) I'll get used to it with a bit more experience (more than 10 mins yesterday and some time this evening!). Discussions were paused while I did other things so I thought they were inactive; all messages came at once when I reclicked on it, so thanks for the missed comment about FAs. Hopefully more will appear soon (when I find the time to finish my latest draft). Anyway, thanks for the tips! Best, PeterSymonds | talk 22:48, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

Newton

Thanks for answering my plea for help, and yes, there are many things called Newton. But seriously, seriously now, what do you think the enquirer usually wants? Is it the SI unit of force? Is it the chocolate bar? Is it the pop group? No! It is Sir Isaac, a man who 'doth bestride this petty world like a colossus". Can you help me make him top? Replacing the SI unit of force, which is currently top. Let's help not to make Wiki a laughing stock! John Wheater (talk) 19:05, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for repeating your previous advice, but I seriously disagree. Is there some way opinion among cognoscenti such as yourself could be canvassed? I see the same laughable error with 'Wellington', where priority goes to the obscure city which was named after him! John Wheater (talk) 12:13, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

Dear Helpful

It does seem unlikely that you & I will be able to reach agreement on this matter.

Your idea of polling those interested in Newton seems particularly odd, as the problem is not confined to Sir Isaac, but is shared by the Duke of Wellington, Abraham Lincoln, and General Ulysses S. Grant.

To me it seems clear that a google ‘feeling lucky’ approach is right for towering world figures. The myriad other matches should be shown by “This page is about the US President Abraham Lincoln. For other Lincolns please see…”

In this way the irritation of the second search is not experienced by the majority of enquirers. And it stops Wikipedia looking silly.

I notice also that the mood of your advice has changed from subjunctive to imperative:-). When you say (my emboldening) "…I suggest that you establish a consensus to change it, on the Newton talk page, located here. If the editors that discuss on that page agree, then it will be changed. If not, then **there will be no change**. I hope this helps! --The Helpful One (Review) 17:30, 12 April 2008 (UTC)", it looks as though the desired change could only be applied by a sort of elite Wiki Priesthood. Is that right? It seems quite contrary to principle. If it is open to anyone, maybe you could point me to where the instructions are.

I’d also like to submit this point to a larger forum than just thee & me. Any suggestions?

With best wishes,

Yours aye,

JohnJohn Wheater (talk) 13:58, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks. You have helped me many times so I would like you to see my user page(not the talk page) Coolgyingman (talk) 21:40, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

P.S. Can you get me a code for a user box that says "this user has too many userboxes"

24 WikiProject

Hello there, I see you are on the 24 WikiProject. It's been quite dead for some time now, and me personally, I intend to revive it. I considered maybe even a 24 Portal, i see the project founder hasn't been on Wikipedia for nearly a year. What are your thoughts on the project? Are you still interested in it? And would you help revive it? Let me know, I would intend to help out a lot, maybe "take over" the founders position, well not take over, but possibly help lead the project? Was just a thought and I wanted your input. My talk page would be the best place. Cheers, Steve Crossin (talk) (anon talk) 14:51, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

Your Ignorant and Incorrect Allegations of Vandalism in the General Electric Article

Would any of you please bother reading the relevant categories and links rather than making straw man arguments? As established, under the law, GE is a person and J.delanoy is therefore incorrect in claiming that GE is not capable of being considered a criminal. Moreover, if you bothered reading the links, you would be aware that GE defrauded the United States Government of $26.5 million and engaging in illegal arms sales abroad. Such fraud is notable in and of itself due to its scale and involvement in the international arms trade. Please also note that Martha Stewart is listed in the category, which you do not claim to be vandalism or inappropriate for the category due to the fact that her crimes were quite a bit smaller than those of GE in terms of the scale of fraud committed and the global impact of the crime. Also, the reference to GE's offences as federal felonies in the United States provide some context as to the nature of the criminal action and cannot constitute vandalism. Please admit that your allegations against me are false and commit yourself to understanding the nature of corporate personhood and the scale of criminal offences in the USA before your ignorance leads you to make similarly erroneous statements in the future. --213.166.90.130 (talk) 13:17, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

HP references

Thanks for chiming in at Talk:Harry Potter, Thehelpfulone. You mentioned finding one source I noted for HP as Harry Potter. I included 2 sources in this edit:

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Harry_Potter&diff=204334982&oldid=204294630.

Those two are newspaper articles that use "HP" to refer to Harry Potter without spelling out what "HP" stands for. There are 16 like that in the commercial news database I searched. Arcayne calls these non-notable, although I'm not clear on the reason.

Talk:Harry Potter/Archive 10#HP.3F

That section has two different references from the earlier attempt to add "HP" to Harry Potter, from the Sunday Times and the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Those use the abbreviation and indicate what it means. Arcayne calls these non-notable because they are just saving space and/or ink. There are 336 like that in the news search I used.

Thanks again. -- JHunterJ (talk) 22:18, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use Image:Sony_Ericsson_M600i.png

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Sony_Ericsson_M600i.png. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Rettetast (talk) 18:05, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

Time to be helpful again

You need to live up to your username again, by the way you must feel pretty good that Jimbo sent a message to you, nice! Just want to ask how many current users are there on wikipedia, say have made an edit in the last 3 months? I know theres 6.9mn users but probably around 60-70% maybe more have there pages in red which means its been deleted and they dont exist anymore. Can you help me out? I have looked for the page all over but i cant find it. By the way, when your ready to become an admin shout it out, you got my support. Thanks Roadrunnerz45 (talk) 09:06, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

Image due for deletion.

RE http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_abacus

I have made several attempts to add the image Abacus Usages.jpg and have added an appropriate tag identifying myself as the sole author of the image but it continues to be deleted. Without this image the text I added is incomprehensible as the image illustrates my main points. Since I have been unable to add the image I tried to remove the text I added as I would rather have no entry than one that is incomplete. If the image I lately re-uploaded does not have sufficient information to establish my authorship then I must be incapable of following the instructions for adding and image and would therefore ask it and the text I added be removed.

VANDALISM

WHY IS THAT VANDALISM --Freedom (song) (talk) 19:21, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

If you look at this guy's Norwegian userpage, he first claims to be User:Wellwater Conspiracy, the the next day User:Freedom (song). See this diff. to see what I mean. He's clearly a sockpuppeteer. Best wishes from the Norwegian wiki. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.212.44.13 (talk) 16:07, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Tangobot failing to parse an RfA?

the RfA in question. I noticed Tangobot's operator is gone, so I figured I'd see if you could help. Any idea what the problem is? Enigma message Review 18:52, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for taking a look. The bot has been experiencing problems lately. I notice them because the Tangobot RfA page is my Wikipedia homepage. It also happens to be transcluded on numerous other pages! :) Enigma message Review 19:03, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

thank spam

Thank you for voting in my RfA, which passed with 194 supporting, 9 opposing, and 4 neutral.

Your kindness and constructive criticism is very much appreciated. I look forward to using the tools you have granted me to aid the project. I would like to give special thanks to Tim Vickers, Anthony and Acalamari for their nominations.

Thank you again, VanTucky

Eddie Rickenbacker

Rickenbacker was not given a middle name a birth, Read the article. And I had explained my edit in the edit summary.

Please do not revert my edits. I had just completed a chronological re-ordering of this article and lost 1/2 hour of editing because you had reverted my middle name edit. Please made sure someone is a vandal before knee-jerk reverting like that. Check their talk page before warning them - if you would have checked mine, you would have noticed that yours is the first vandal/unconstructive edit warning I've received since I started editing in September of last year. That should tell you something. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Manway (talkcontribs) 20:59, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for the warning removal. Appreciate the quick response. Manway (talk) 21:01, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
You're right - I backed up to my edit and it accepted it. Thanks - sorry for MY knee-jerk reaction. Manway (talk) 21:04, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

nat selection

how was my 2nd editing of natural selection considered vandalism? it is a fact that the unfavorable trait becomes less common in a population while natural selection is occuring —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tristanf12 (talkcontribs) 20:06, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

Comments from User:Ponygon

how do you and Wikipedia know whenever i make changes? P.S if they always can revert it a few seconds after the person did it, why is there somethings false information on Wikipedia? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ponygon (talkcontribs) 20:08, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

PPS: You didn't even answer my questions, even though you were able to send me another message. And i think that you are wrong, i merely put an additional page in the Ash Ketchum Page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ponygon (talkcontribs) 20:19, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

Timothy Patrick Murphy

Before accusing me of vandalism, please take a look at the page for "Timothy Patrick Murphy". You will see that the whole article is repeated twice (once with hyperlinks, once without). By deleting the superfluous text, I am simply trying to keep the article clear and concise. 80.177.7.203 (talk) 20:29, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

Unconstructive?

You accused me of making unconstructive changes to the Foals page. I changed the genre from math rock to indie rock, simply because they are NOT math rock. I've already explained that in the discussion part. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.151.71.233 (talk) 09:50, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Hey T.H.O

I really liked your response to the "How do I make an article" question, it comes up a lot. Thats actually what I want to ask you, could I copy your response and create a template out of it? It would be quick and helpful for responding on pages other than the help desk. Thanks, Dz DarkZorro 18:58, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
