FL Main page proposal
You either nominated a WP:FLC or closed such a nomination recently. As such, you are the type of editor whose opinion I am soliciting. We now have over 400 featured lists and seem to be promoting in excess of 30 per month of late (41 in August and 42 in September). When Today's featured article (TFA) started (2004-02-22), they only had about 200 featured articles and were barely promoting 20 new ones per month. I think the quality of featured lists is at least as good as the quality of featured articles was when they started appearing on the main page. Thus, I am ready to open debate on a proposal to institute a List of the Day on the main page with nominations starting November 1, 2007, voting starting December 1, 2007 and main page appearances starting January 1, 2008. For brevity, the proposal page does not discuss the details of eventual main page content, but since the work has already been done, you should consider this proposal assuming the eventual content will resemble the current content at the featured content page. Such output would probably start at the bottom of the main page. The proposal page does not debate whether starting with weekly list main page entries would be better than daily entries. However, I suspect persons in favor of weekly lists are really voicing opinions against lists on the main page since neither TFA nor Picture of the day started as weekly endeavors, to the best of my knowledge. See the List of the Day proposal and comment at WP:LOTDP and its talk page.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 19:39, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the review. It all looks valid, so I'll get on and address them later. One question - any ideas on sorting the personal life/early career problem? I agree its a bit odd, but I didn't fancy short sections. Could they be merged/reorganised?

Dear The Rambling Man, i'm trying to start an article about Palex but it says i can't b/c it's protected from creation and that you dealted previous articles about Palex. I was wondering if I could start a new article about them. It wouldn't be just a stub but an actually article about this couple. Please,I need your help.

- There's a template for sorting names, to whit {{sortname}}. Makes the name column work by surname (which is better) instead of first name. I'm not sure how the flags would sort. I'd just put the country name next door if I were you.... The Rambling Man 11:04, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

PokerTH
Hi, i now spent the hole morning to edit the page PokerTH, (which is not a website) and you deleted it. So I do not agree that it is not significant, so why is for example Chess (application) signigicant? Momet 10:09, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
- The article made no assertion of notability whatsoever. As for other similarly poor articles, please see WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. The Rambling Man 10:10, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
- It has been downloaded 136,313 (Overal ranking 143) from sourcefoge... (compare EiffelStudio with 2,067 downloads) Momet 10:15, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
- For the article to remain it must use reliable sources to verify web notability. If you do this then the article won't be deleted. The Rambling Man 10:17, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

For example, you could look at a good article to understand how to correctly cite relevant and reliable information. The Rambling Man 12:17, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
- I know them, thanks. As I showed in the last comment, pokerth is not unsignificant (+ 229% of global Internet users who visit this site (3 ms change)), and there was a link to Sourceforge (-> reliable source). I'm not involed in the development of it, nor I gain money from it, I created the page, because I thought it is relevant to do it. Not because I make profit from it (nobody would in a direct way earn money from it, it's a game without money excange, maybe there is some that loose money ?). Anyway now It's deleted and I'll probably not do it again. Momet 12:33, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for placing it in my sandbox. I'll do my best to improve it and find reliable sources, as soon I have time. Have a nice day Momet —Preceding comment was added at 14:03, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
List of Ipswich Town F.C. players
Sorry wasn't able to contribute to peer review but did make a couple of edits/suggestions. I've been away for most of the weekend. Well done on FLC. Quick peer review question - I noticed West Bromwich Albion F.C. already has a peer review from a while back. Will this cause a problem when I request a new peer review? Does it overwrite the peer review page, append to it or create a brand new page? --Jameboy 17:27, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
- What you'll need to do is move the old peer review to something like "Wikipedia:Peer review/West Bromwich Albion F.C/archive 1" and then remove the automatically created redirect where the old peer review used to be. Then start the next peer review off. Let me know if I can help more. The Rambling Man 17:30, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
- Oh, and commiserations for yesterday. Sounded like an interesting game. Besides being 100% Tractor, I'm about 25% Col U, so no sympathy!! The Rambling Man 17:31, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

YCFC seasons
Hi. I've finally found a source for top scorers for those six seasons for York City F.C. seasons, but they are for league only. Do you think it would get in the way of a FLC nomination for top scorers to only include league goals? Cheers, Mattythewhite 12:11, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
- No, I don't. Add them with a footnote that says league only scores and it'll be better than it is now! The Rambling Man 12:17, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

Hello
Thanks for piping for me. How bout you offer to userfy that poker article, with a prod so it gets deleted if not improved? --Dweller 15:16, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
- Hello, pipes are always welcome. Yes, I could do that. But an Alexa rating of 660,000 doesn't look that notable to me. However, since I'm such a nice bloke, and since your suggestions usually make sense, I'll give it a look... The Rambling Man 15:24, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
I accept your terms! NB I'm not sure about the change you did to the refs at the list article... doesn't seem to be in line with the template instructions. --Dweller 11:58, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

Yes I just saw it thanks. I don't have a problem with the bot taggin images with no rationale whatsoever but it is kind of frustrating when I upload many images which seemingly have the correct rationale to help wikipedia and I get drilled 50 kb messages!! Conflict of interest?
hello... I'm the editor of a site called myfootballwriter.com, we've met before, link removal etc. Anyway, seeing as we've met before I wonder if I could ask for some advice. Our network is expanding (you might persoanlly like myfootballwriter.com/ipswich town) and I think we need a wikipedia page of our own. There seems to be some odd ideas about who we are and what we're doing. For example, we're not a fan site, but professional journalists. It would clearly be a conflict of interest if I set it up... wouldn't it? (Nsm100 18:02, 25 October 2007 (UTC))

Ipswich Town F.C. managers
I've created and rolled out Template:Ipswich Town F.C. managers. I've lifted the info from your list article (minus the caretakers) so there shouldn't be anything controversial, but feel free to point out or correct any errors. I've also started removing some of the corresponding succession boxes (which are effectively duplicating info), so let me know if you disagree with this approach. ITFC POTY FLC
and any more abbreviations one cares to add... Though my one actual objection still stands, which is the Voting mechanism section. However you word it, <2 lines is much too short to be a separate section, and should go into the lead.
On another tack, I'd be grateful if you could spare a moment to have a look at Birmingham City F.C., and tell me what other sections etc need adding for it to be worth putting up for good and hopefully (eventually) featured article. At some point I'll put it up for peer review anyway, but would much appreciate some advice first from someone who's been through the procedure with their club article. cheers, Struway2 10:20, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for the helpful advice and suggestions, and for taking the time to make them. Re the stadium(s) section, the intention was to do it and the main St Andrews (stadium) article - which needs a complete rewrite - and Muntz Street all together, when and if my local library comes up with Simon Inglis's Football Grounds book which I've reserved but am still awaiting. Praps I should make a start on the stadium section anyway, can't make it worse... Thanks again for taking the trouble. cheers, Struway2 20:48, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry to butt in, I have the Inglis book and have added it to the WPFOOTY Project Booklist. Just thought I'd mention it in case your library lets you down and you need some specific info. Cheers. --Jameboy 23:16, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

SR Merchant Navy Class
Good evening, Rambling Man.
I don't know whether you are interested, but as you gave a fairly objective peer review on the SR West Country and Battle of Britain Classes article, (which incidentally has recently achieved FA status), I am wondering if you would like to have first refusal on undertaking one on the above article. If not, then no worries. Cheers, --Bulleid Pacific 20:18, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
Ipswich Town are Potty
I've left my last few comments before supporting the FLC, at the list talk page. Ignore as you see fit. Btw, I'm starting to feel like the WP:MOBY debate is edging toward keep... am I overly optimistic? --Dweller 20:40, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
Little help?
Hey TRM, I have applied for Adminship and was hoping for a bit of your coaching (please don't take this as me canvassing, that's the furthest from my attempt here). I seem to be facing a lot of opposition and don't really know how to respond to it. I'm wondering if I should withdraw and try again another time or stay in and hope for the best with eyes tightly shut. I've mentioned this over at the talk page for my request. If you could guide or coach me as to what I should do about this? Thanks mate. --lincalinca 05:15, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
- Hi again! Thanks for your advice on the matter. I suppose I should have perhaps followed a few other people's RfAs before submitting my own in order to guage how to respond, but I didn't and have to wait and see hwo this pans out. Hopefully it's favourably, but really, there's nothing rock solid at this point: people could (though unlikely) withdraw opposition. You're exactly right about the gnomish work. I have been getting a little bit more familiar with the deletion pages (particularly the template and category ones, since I've only dealt in articles and images before, so I thought I'd spread my wings). One common thread is my lack of contributions to the project and policy space. My defence is one I believe in, but what's your position on this? Should a person dedicate some editing time towards these articles? I do have a considerable amount of contributions to the tempaltes and template talk spaces, in many cases outweighing the caveats for many administrators in that area. Going into this, i knew my count was somewhat low, but we're told we shouldn't be tracking the number of edits we make, as it's not a true representation necessarily as to the volume of our workload and contributions. Anyway, bow I'm being a rambling man. Thanks for your swift response (sorry I've not been so swift, I've just played a very short gig). --lincalinca 14:17, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. But I am quite surprised that it's been promoted before Ipswich! Mattythewhite 17:42, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

Template
Thanks... and thanks also for the upgrade to my user page that I only just noticed. By the way, I'm ripping off your /pages userpage. Hope you don't mind. Re the question - erm, hard to know what you had in mind. Should "Roeder" have read "Jewell" (making a disambig problem)? How long till Roeder has a close date? Should caretakers be included? Gawd knows. Nice gag headline in tonight's Metro... It's Carrow Roeder. --Dweller 00:04, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
- Ah. I think that the way you've designed the template makes a succession box entirely redundant. --Dweller 10:39, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

Powderfinger, again
I've made some replies to the peer review of Powderfinger you gave. I'd really appreciate it if you would be able to have another quick look over the article again, see if you can pick up any other errors. If you can't, it's okay. Thanks, ~ Sebi 09:39, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
Rampant Rambling Man, and favour
Hi Rambling Man, my you have been on a template binge haven't you!!! Thanks for doing that! I am trying to create an optional override for the managers link so that you can link it.
Now for the favour. Could you take a look at the Victoria Cross for Australia article and give it a copyedit. As part of the FAC Tony has requested an extra eye look over it to see if there are any little redindancies in the prose. If you can't, don't worry and i'll pop over to the LOCE. Thanks. Woodym555 17:31, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
- Oh the template now takes a new parameter. You can add the "manager" parameter. Used to put "list of XXX F.C. managers etc" as a wikilink for the Managers in the title bar. Woodym555 01:14, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

I'll get to promoting it in a few hours. As there is no opposition, you could promote it yourself if you don't want to wait. -- Scorpion0422 19:28, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

Caretakers
For the MCFC template, it had two caretakers but did not include several others. Thanks to my books, Manchester City: The Complete Record in particular, I can say with certainty who was and was not a caretaker at Manchester City. In the case of Phil Neal, he was (thankfully) never appointed manager, and the club refer to him only as a caretaker, even though he picked the team more times than Coppell. In general I do not think caretakers should be on templates. Lists yes, but not templates - if that Coventry example is anything to go by, it can get pretty bloated. To have someone who may have been in temporary charge for only one or two games and was never actually appointed manager doesn't seem right, like claiming I have my boss's position if I cover for him when he's away. I think cases where someone was a caretaker for months on end can be taken on their own merits. Oldelpaso 13:27, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
- On the subject of managers, I gone for a slightly different approach to the usual with List of Manchester City F.C. managers, but having got most of the way I've hit something of a writers block. Aside from filling out the one redlink, what do you think needs doing before an FLC? Oldelpaso 15:20, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
Football manager templates
Thanks for the message. I'll gradually work through the templates, rolling them out into the managers' articles and fixing links as I go. It's difficult to stay focused as I tend to get distracted into improving/expanding the articles!
Are you intending to create templates for the Scottish clubs? Then there's the international managers; not to mention the rest of the world! That's the problem with WP - where do you stop. It becomes an addiction if you're not careful. Keep up the good work. --Daemonic Kangaroo 07:46, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
- My primary source is Soccerbase which is good for English and higher level Scottish clubs, I'd like to do international managers as well while I'm at it, at least for the home nations. If you can point me to other reliable online sources so I could tailor my semi-automated app accordingly. Cheers for the encouragement. The Rambling Man 08:36, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

- I'm breathless. Best we've played probably all season. Sharper strikers and we'd have had 4 or 5. Bit better defensively too, but still not good enough. Grounds for optimism though. --Dweller 17:50, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

Please take a look at this crummy stub I just started. I'm not happy with its clarity or accuracy. Also, notability isn't asserted. And it needs a RS and probably a diagram, but initially accuracy and notability are the keys. Can you help? --Dweller 15:46, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

User_talk:UsaSatsui#Your_edit --Dweller 08:18, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
- No I don't think so. But perhaps it would have been a modicum less officious to leave him a note on his page rather than prod the sandbox. I'm guessing the end result will be the same but at least no-one could accuse you of not behaving "in the spirit of the encyclopaedia"...! Either way, that edit summary was definitely snipey, don't rise to it. The Rambling Man 08:35, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, I thought about it, but thought that as I'd already forgotten to do anything about it once, not prodding would leave the chance of forgetting again, lol. --Dweller 10:46, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
- Water under the bridge I should think... I'd leave the sandbox where it is, it's not in mainspace so in theory it ought to remain I guess. If there's any movement to restore it to mainspace then we kill it. The Rambling Man 10:48, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

Image:CompletedTestAveragesAbove50.png
Hi TRM, I tried another version scaling from zero at Image:Cricket batting averages above 50.png as yours was a bit misleading: a reader might think Bradman was 3 or 4 times better than his nearest rival - that may or may not be true, but the chart data doesn't say that. What do you think? —Moondyne 10:34, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
- Hi. Interfering furiously, there's good arguments either way, but I do believe you should stick to completed careers only. Two reasons; it retards obsolescence and because most performances drop off toward the end of their careers, so including whipper-snappers is as misleading as including statistical freaks caused by exceedingly short careers (such as currently-playing debutant centurions, or, specifically, Andy Ganteaume). --Dweller 10:56, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
- The series does have a minimum 20 innings criterion, but here's a version with completed careers only. My main issue was fixing the x-axis. One problem with using completed careers only is that every time a Hussey/Yousuf/Tendulkar/Pieterson retires he has to be added back in. —Moondyne 13:23, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
Hi
Thanks for your message, I love wikipedia, and use it as my main source of knowledge. Currently, I don't have the energy to contribute, but everytime i see an error in an article (especially gramamar, or redundance) i fix it, just because i feel obligated to spare others. Anyway, I'll remember your suggestion for help and perhaps I'll cash it in, in the future. Oh, just wanted to say that it's a great job you're doing. Falcor84 11:43, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

- Don't mind either of those. Justin Fashanu makes for a story with some interest, and quite a lot of RS. Photo might be tricky though. --Dweller 11:18, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

OK, if you think a photo can be rustled up, let's go for Sutton. At least balancing POV should be easy, as there's a nice juicy controversy in his background. His career straddles internet life, which might make it tricky to find online stuff about the early days. --Dweller 11:30, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

OK. Criteria. Must be a Cat A Hall of Famer and a recent or very notable player. Or one I like for some reason or other. And we must have access to a photo. Here's the choice: Barry Butler, Bryan Gunn, Kevin Keelan, Martin Peters, Dave Stringer. Can we get a photo of any of them? I'll see if any of my sources have a pic of Gunny or Peters - optimistic. --Dweller 16:35, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
- Hmmmmmmmmm. Lol. It's not even a very good photo! I won't get a fast reply from my sources. Any joy on Flickr etc for Gunn/Peters? --Dweller 17:11, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for all those edits. Much appreciated. I was doing the flags as and when I checked the nationality of each, but I suppose I still check it as and when I do the stats for them!
Let me know of a choice of FAC. I'm off to break the bad news to Chris Sutton. I'll tell him it's because he wouldn't play in an "A" international match; that'll make him feel better. --Dweller 10:36, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
- And, by the way, I've had an email from NCFC confirming the Cat C HoF members. I've posted at Wikipedia:Reliable Sources/Noticeboard but I'm not convinced anyone'll buy it. Might just have to sit and wait till they get round to updating the website. --Dweller 10:50, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

LOTD proposal
You have nominated a recent successful WP:FL. There have been two recent proposals to begin a List of the Day feature on the main page, which have both received majorities but have not been approved as overwhelming support sufficient for the main page. WP:LOTDP is a new proposal to try to get the ball rolling based on the original proposal.
