Wasting energy

I know I'm wasting energy but I think I'm wasting it to save it. If you don't bold—particulary if you go out of your way not to bold—you're going to be talking about it indefinitely. Really, I did look at the history. There's multiple examples of "wasted energy" in bolding and reverting b/c editors seem to have made it a point of principle not to bold with this one article. Why? Just bold the article title or the name (like everybody else), and move along.

Anyhow, you have a Leopard at the top of your page, so we can agree on that bit of beauty. Editing that has been my latest bit of not-wasted-time. Drop by! (You'll be greeted with a bolded first mention :). Marskell 21:07, 15 September 2007 (UTC)

Re: Just curious

I'm just thinking that we should put finalised figures in the info box and change it accordingly when news arrives. I'm not insistent though; adding the phrase "at least" is fine too at this moment. Bonchygeez 17:21, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi. Sorry, I'm being annoying at the article talk page. Hope you have a good time in London, and don't get a cough from all the smoke. --Dweller 11:21, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

ITFC seasons / Robsons

If it's any consolation (and I know it isn't) you had the whole of the 2nd half on Saturday (barring a freak last five minutes) and deserved an equaliser. 4-0 was quite ridiculous really. Anyway... I've left you a comment re: ITFC seasons. Also I've been inspired by your Bobby Robson featured article and am starting to improve not-his-son Bryan Robson's article. Could do with some advice on when to include the chapter in a book reference, as I'm confused by how you've done it. If the pages are referenced out of order, how can you tell which pages belong to which chapter? Would it be better just to include the chapter name in every reference? Cheers. --Jameboy 22:21, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

(copied from my talk page as no login = no watchlist..., so you may not have seen my reply otherwise) Have to agree about Bryan's poor managerial stats, although I haven't verified them yet. As an aside, I noticed from here that Bobby Robson was once England B coach, seemingly around 1978-80, which I thought you might want to mention in the article. It seems quite relevant, especially as he went on to pick some of the same players at full international level. I'd be happy to add it in myself, but thought you might have some additional supporting material in books etc. that would put it in context. Cheers. --Jameboy 12:59, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Weekend

Yeah, I know. Can't keep away. We gave an awful performance on Saturday. That's two Mr Grants who may not be in their managerial roles for long. Watched MotD - thought Arsenal were outstanding, but I laughed at Earnshaw who left us cos he wanted to play in the Prem. --Dweller 22:51, 23 September 2007 (UTC)

And when you're done there <grins> please do review my contribution section at the foot of Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Peterborough. I want to know if you think I'm being too harsh, particularly ref WP:CITE. I recognise that the article writer has a point when he refers me to CITE, but I worry because the sources are inaccessible, it's impossible for a reader to ascertain what material in the paragraph is sourced and what isn't, which becomes even more of a problem as the article endures future edits. Furthermore, surely FA is about the highest possible standards? Give it to me straight, blue-tongue. --Dweller 10:47, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

Real Madrid C.F.

Johnson and Carcel really manage the club for zero games because if you look carefully it says: "Only La Liga matches are counted", and La Liga was founded in 1929 (Johnson and Carcel didn't managed the team in La Liga period.--Hadrianos1990 12:28, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

What do you make

Of this weird section? (And the one below it) Is it some kind of Google honeypot? --Dweller 14:42, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

Sorry to jump in on this, but yes. That's exactly what it is. Obviously someone has a massive thing for that particular page. If you can get enough links to a page, it boosts its search position, irrespective of its content. It's not really Google that's affected, because Google is a bit more cleverly written than most search engines. A little more intuitive, but many others don't have that luxury. --lincalinca 14:47, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
Ah. Should this be "discouraged"? --Dweller 14:50, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, I don't know exactly how the current pagerank algorithm works for Google but this is definitely suspect. Suggest a quiet word followed by removing the said external link honey pot... The Rambling Man 14:54, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

5 Hour Energy

I tried to contribute another article to Wikipedia. I followed all the guidelines you suggested in the last discussion we had. However, the article was deleted as it was noted as blatant advertising. I don't understand why this happened. I wrote an article on one of my favorite energy drinks, 5 Hour Energy. I used objective content and followed examples of other energy drink articles listed here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_energy_drinks

I am asking you for advice on this matter as you were very helpful the last time I had problems with an article. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

FA medal

The Featured Article Medal
This medal is awarded to The Rambling Man for being a significant contributor to 7 Featured articles, nominating 4 of those. I hereby award you the Featured Article Medal. Woodym555 12:42, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

even if some of these are for Ipswich related articles. ;) Woodym555 12:42, 25 September 2007 (UTC)
I'm honoured. Serious contributions to seven featured articles and three featured lists makes me very proud, but by no means were they solo efforts. But thanks! The Rambling Man 19:32, 25 September 2007 (UTC)
Thats the nature of a wiki. (Hence the significant contributor part). The actual criteria are sig cons to 3 FAs i think) Although it is hard to define significant contributor. Is it the man who has slaved away for months finding sources and building up the article or is it the person who guides it through the opposes at FAC? Either way you deserve this medal. Woodym555 20:32, 26 September 2007 (UTC)
Still, much appreciated. I hope that I can continue to do this... when my rfa went through, it seemed to be the biggest concern, that I wouldn't be able to continue to expand the wiki. I am determined to keep doing it. Thanks again. The Rambling Man 20:39, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

LYNX Rapid Transit Services

Hello! After seeing your comments for New Mexico Rail Runner Express, I was wondering if you could take a look at the article for LYNX Rapid Transit Services. I have been working on the article and would like some feedback on it before I start the nomination process for GA. Any critiques or constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated. More old, dead, people for GA Review

Would you be so kind as to coach Edward the Martyr through to GA - Not be confused with Edmund, this is another king who got snuffed and then strange things were reported by everybody. I also have withdrawn Thomas Cranmer from FA, it had been rotting there since July with one support and one oppose. Somebody nominated it for GA. It is long, but that should be a rubber stamp as it would have passed FA with a little more attention by reviewers. As always, changes will be made to these articles as soon as I see you suggestions. I thank you for your consideration. -- SECisek 20:05, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

Oh, for what it is worth, our Edmund the Martyr troll seems to have at last lost intrest. Yea! -- SECisek 20:17, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

Villa (again)

Hi, could you ramble over to History of Aston Villa F.C. (1874-1961) when you have got the time and give any comments? I am currently pondering whether the dates are split correctly between this and History of Aston Villa F.C. (1961-present). I don't feel that it is split well at the moment, not least because of the difference in time: 95 years compared to about 40! I am thinking of spliting it at 1961, the inaugral League Cup win. This will then leave the second page talking about the 60s slump, board changes and the dreaded Third division. What do you think? Thanks. Woodym555 14:37, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I'd agree. Split more evenly would mean you shouldn't be accused of recentism and it makes sense just from a purely chronological sense. I'd do it. The Rambling Man 11:35, 1 October 2007 (UTC)
As a result could you delete the following redirects, i doubt anyone is going to use these as common search terms.
  • History of Aston Villa (1874-1966)
  • History of Aston Villa (1874-1970)
  • History of Aston Villa (1970-Present)
  • History of Aston Villa (1967-Present)
Thanks Woodym555 16:48, 1 October 2007 (UTC)
Done, no worries. The Rambling Man 17:12, 1 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks a lot. Any comments on our first attempt at clearing up the History of Aston Villa F.C. (1874-1961) article? I know that you are inundated with requests but any comments would be appreciated. Thanks. Woodym555 18:14, 1 October 2007 (UTC)
Cool. No bother, that's what I'm here for. I'll check it out when I get a moment. Presumably, as we've discussed in brief before, you're heading for minimum GA on this so I'll review it accordingly. Just don't hold your breath! All the best. The Rambling Man 19:50, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

Hello

Just got irritated by a rude and persistent reversion of some sourced material at Life of Brian. And then I thought, I can't believe I'm spending so long / so much effort trying to get a snippet of material included in such a trivial article. And this guy's so rude I can't be bothered engaging in further dialogue with him. I'll be keeping to exceedingly marginal contributions for a while. --Dweller 15:59, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Article ratings

As a veteran of Good and Featured articles I wondered if you could help me? I'm still struggling to understand the difference between a Good Article and an A-class article. I've tried to read my way around this but am still confused as ever. James Milner for instance is designated a 'Good Article' but the actual rating is A-class, not GA. I know GA and FA each have a specific list of criteria but what about A-class? How do the criteria differ between A-class and GA? Also which milestone of the two would an article typically reach first? I'm working on a couple of articles to get them up to a decent standard but my confusion over the standards means I'm not really clear what I'm aiming at. Maybe I should just get them peer-reviewed and see what happens...? --Jameboy 11:16, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

Hope you're enjoying your break by the way! --Jameboy 11:25, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
Hey Jameboy, thanks for your question. I'll be brutally honest, I'm not up to speed on what classifies an article up from GA to A-class. I concentrate on GA and FA and not much else, and even (whispers) think that an A-class is probably not helpful (as you and I have proved but not really getting it!) However, what I can tell you is that you start off with a Start or Stub article, then a B-class, then a GA, then an A-class, then FA. So, that's the order in which you'd expect to see it occur. However, I've taken B-class to FA in one (long) jump, there's no obligation to go through all the stages. Having said that, as you've pointed out, a peer review is absolutely the best place to start when attempting to push for something like a GA or FA - here you'll expect to receive comments of people who 'know what to look for' which is essential for success. If you'd like me to cast an eye over your articles and let you know what I think of them now and what they could attain (and how easily) then we can progress from there? Sound alright? The Rambling Man 17:26, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
I'm good thanks, and more than happy with that answer. I'll concentrate on GA and FA going forward. The main ones I'm working on are:
  • West Bromwich Albion F.C. - once I've added more citations in the history section, I'll put it up for peer review.
  • List of West Bromwich Albion F.C. managers - have already had some good feedback on this. I still need to expand the lead, and thoroughly research and give citations for the actual figures, as soccerbase has some of them wrong. Should hopefully be OK for Featured List Candidate once I'm done.
  • Bob Taylor (footballer) - Have a few bits to add, but is almost ready for peer review.
  • Bryan Robson - gradually working my way through his autobiography to produce the main body of the article, will then supplement with other sources. Still a fair way to go.
If you have any advice on the above articles it would be much appreciated. --Jameboy 18:14, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

NCFC POTY

Hello. Took me a while to understand the comment about turning them yellow and green, lol. I'm considering removing the "played whole career" thingy. May be relevant for an article on the Hall of Fame, but not in player of the year. Besides, it'd be lousy to research, lol. What do you think? Oh, btw, there's one more ref (8) to be tidied, lol. I'm waiting to find a RS (or any source, actually) for additional 10 people added to the HoF in 2006, as well as the daddy of RS for the whole list. --Dweller 11:31, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

WikiCup

Hello the rambling man, welcome aboard to the WikiCup. I am pretty glad that an admin like you can take part. The cup will start as soon as we have enough users and all our plans are sorted. Best of luck. The sunder king 16:53, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi, i have decided to expand the tournament, the best thing you could do for me is to advertise it on your user page, (now 16 users) El-Nin09 17:03, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, been quite caught up with stuff (not done much editing today). I'll get back to you properly when I can. --Dweller 22:07, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

The Ashes

HAve you seen this? This needs a overhaul urgently. It had 10 cites two days ago. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 07:00, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, it's in a bad way. Certainly doesn't match my idea of a Featured Article at any rate... The Rambling Man 07:01, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

IP Block

Thanks for your reply. I initially kind of freaked out and you're the admin I've had the most direct contact with, so my instinct was to contact you. I then cooled down and bothered to read the block page and followed the appropriate instructions and *voila*, mercury helped and fixed it up for me. Thanks anyway! --lincalinca 07:33, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

Grande13

Check his block log. He's reverting on an article he just got off a 3RR block for. Will (talk) 07:44, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

Please direct me to the task force you mentioned. I actually didn't revert those articles if you checked, as i took out a good deal of trivia and references from them and also attempted to implement a few of them into other parts of the article. Grande13 11:47, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

Doing it again... Will (talk) 19:27, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

arrhhh

For some reason I can not revert here [2], it won't allow me. Can you try? Also do you know why my reverts are going through? Thanks! Phgao 13:17, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

Oh that's strange, after I sent this message, I refresh the page and bang your revert is there; thus I conclude there must be some lag or something preventing me from seeing the most recent revision. Phgao 13:18, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
Sometimes there's a lag in the database updates, sometimes you can't revert because someone beat you to it, sometimes you think you reverted it but someone else did... that's what happens when several people are trying to do the right thing all at the same time! The Rambling Man 13:21, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
Yes indeed, thanks for the clarification; the weird whims of the wonderful world of wikipedia (..only reason I said that was to use alliteration) :D Phgao 14:05, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

Ipswich murder article

I think that she and her should be avoided as far as possible whihc is the only thing I have a problem with I prefer the use of the surname primarily and she after a comma not at the start of a sentence.--Lucy-marie 18:05, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

I see what you are saying I am not wholly opposed to she all together just at the beginning of a sentence. I personally think good prose avoid she or he and things like that at the begining of a sentence.--Lucy-marie 18:15, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

Slakr's Caffeine Award

For helping out during a time when everyone else seemed asleep, I award you some caffeine for your exceptional effort. I probably would have considered giving you crack, but then you might have started reverting contribs by random people, which probably would have been a bad thing. :P

Keep up the great work, and cheers =) --slakrtalk / 19:47, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

User:Voyager Bogg

Hi,

I was wondering if you could use your admin powers to do something about User:Voyager Bogg, who I believe is a sock of User:Creepy Crawler based on contribs. I've been playing with this particular sock in their various incarnations, User:XenaLite, User:MagicCreation and User:TheOuterLimits among others. Always the same pattern of contributions - adding barefoot to pages that really don't need it, and adjusting the categories. Thanks, WLU 11:01, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
