Version 2.1
Tip of the day...

Inserting a picture in an article

The syntax used for displaying an image is:

[[Image:{name}|{type}|{location}|{size}|{caption}]]

Only [[Image:{name}]] is required. The other details are optional and can be placed in any order. They are:

Type
'thumb' / 'thumbnail' or 'frame'. This causes image to be displayed with specific formatting. "thumb" is normally preferred.
Location
'right', 'left', 'center' or 'none'. Determines placement of the image on the page. "Left" or "right" is the norm, but large panoramas or timelines can be displayed in the center.
Size
{width}px or {width}x{height}px (e.g. 50x40px, would limit width to 50 and height to 40). Normally only one variable is used. Use common sense when determining the sizes; you can use the "Show preview" button if you need to.
Caption
Any element which cannot be identified as one of the above is automatically treated as caption text. It is traditional to put this last. The caption should identify what the image is, and ideally be a complete sentence that adds to the article by pointing out something a casual reader wouldn't have noticed otherwise, or add information the pertains to the image.

If you have a picture that isn't already in Wikipedia's image collection that you want to include in an article, you will need to upload it first.

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Carpenters LOGO.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Carpenters LOGO.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 18:04, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

Fair use image use, yet again

Over and over and over again I've had to remove the copyrighted, fair use image Image:Carpenters LOGO.png. I know that via another account you were informed of the policy regarding this issue. Yet, you continue to violate it. Today, I come across yet another usage in violation that you created just today [1]. Our policy on fair use images used in this manner is clear; you may NOT use them on templates. See WP:NFCC item #9. If you insist on continuing to willfully violate this policy, I will recommend you be blocked. Please, stop. If you have questions about this I'd be happy to answer. But, continuing to willfully violate the policy is unacceptable. --Durin 12:29, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

  • I don't know that I'm making these mistakes. I don't quite understand why uploading a logo is even a problem. Karen Carpenter's Biggest Fan 18:20, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
    • Uploading a logo isn't a problem in and of itself. Copyrighted works, such as logos, can be used on Wikipedia. However, such usages must follow our policies at Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria. One of the requirements there is that such a work can only be used on actual articles. It may not be used on templates, such as you've been attempting to do. Other questions? I'm happy to answer. --Durin 19:05, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
  • Yes. What other types of images are like logos (cannot be used in templates; only articles)? Karen Carpenter's Biggest Fan 20:30, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
    • Anything marked with a licensing tag that has "fair use" on it somewhere is likely not usable. --Durin 20:28, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
  • So, will it be okay if I just stop adding the logo to other things (besides the band and album page)? Karen Carpenter's Biggest Fan 20:30, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
    • Sure, you can stop adding the logo. --Durin 20:40, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
      • Okay. Sorry for the problems I caused. Karen Carpenter's Biggest Fan 20:41, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

AfD nomination of Haber (Spanish verb)

I've nominated Haber (Spanish verb), an article you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but in this particular case I do not feel that Haber (Spanish verb) satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion; I have explained why in the nomination space (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and the Wikipedia deletion policy). Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Haber (Spanish verb) and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Haber (Spanish verb) during the discussion but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion discussion. Fair use rationale for Image:Solitaire.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Solitaire.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Bleh999 05:57, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Canta.JPG)

Thanks for uploading Image:Canta.JPG. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 18:54, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
