[edit] New York City Subway

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! I've noticed that you have recently been creating many articles about the New York City Subway that had previously not existed; first and foremost, I would like to thank you heartily for taking this task upon yourself. Although it seems as if your articles are more or less taken off of the Station Reporter website, they are far better than nothing, and most of the existing articles about the more obscure stations were pretty much taken off of that site or from nycsubway.org.

I am a member of WikiProject New York City Subway, a WikiProject formed a while ago for the purpose of cleaning up and managing articles relating to the NYC Subway. I invite you to join; simply follow the given link, edit the section "Active" under "Participants," and add your user name.

Just a couple of issues:

  • Some of your articles are of the form <Station> (<Line> station) (e.g., 233rd Street (IRT White Plains Road Line station)), while others leave off the "station." This is no doubt because of the variation in the red links scattered throughout other subway articles. Some time ago, the WikiProject determined that all station articles would be of the format <Station> (<Line>), without the "station" (e.g., 233rd Street (IRT White Plains Road Line)). This is the official policy, regardless of what links might specify. When you encounter red links that include "station," simply create the article, leaving off the "station." Afterwards, create the article from the red link ("station" included) as a redirect to the other article. For instance, if a link says "18th Street (IRT Broadway-Seventh Avenue Line station)", create an article titled "18th Street (IRT Broadway-Seventh Avenue Line)" and then create the other article with the text "#REDIRECT 18th Street (IRT Broadway-Seventh Avenue Line)." When the latter article is referenced, the user will then be redirected to the correct article.
  • Speaking of redirects, you have at times created multiple articles about the same station, one with a title including "station" and one lacking it—again, probably because of the profileration of different link styles. This is not necessary, and in fact creates problems (see Wikipedia:Content forking). The article containing "station" in its title should be a redirect to the other article. Thus, links to the article with "station" redirect to the proper article, which can be updated and edited without having to worry about updating any extra articles.

Again, you've been doing a great job lately, and keep up the good work! If you have any questions about NYC Subway article policy, or about Wikipedia in general, or perhaps about the universe and the meaning of life, feel free to leave me a message on my talk page at any time. Happy editing!

Larry V (talk) 20:59, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Two good questions:
  • Creating redirects is actually quite simple. At first, act like you are creating a new article (e.g., click on a red link, etc.). Instead of actually writing the article, however, insert this text:
    #REDIRECT 18th Street (IRT Broadway-Seventh Avenue Line)

Obviously, you'll have to change the text between the double brackets to fit the particular article. The text between the brackets must be the exact title of the target article. See Wikipedia:Redirect for more help.
  • The infobox is easy enough once you get the hang of it, but it can be difficult at the beginning. Here are a few links:
These three pages give a lot of information; however, the best way to become accustomed using the infobox is to look at articles that include it, and compare the source text with the articles themselves. For a complete list of articles that include (or call) the infobox, see this page. — Larry V (talk) 21:39, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] NYCS Infobox

Seems like you're getting the hang of the infobox. Just a few notes:

  • For colors, use the hexadecimal values given at User:Flamurai/NYCS colors. Include the pound sign.
  • For services (including station service and next north/south service), use the templates listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject New York City Subway/Line templates. Use whatever is appropriate according to the line and location along it. Omit the leading "NYCS."
  • For platforms, use a numeral (e.g., "2"), and link the following infomation, if possible. (For example, 2 side platforms)
  • For tracks, use a numeral (e.g., "4").
  • For the opening date, link the components of the date (e.g., June 12, 2006).
  • For next north/south info, use templates that reflect which service can take a passenger from the current station to the next one. For example, in the infobox at 28th Street (IRT Broadway-Seventh Avenue Line), one would NOT use NYCS Broadway-Seventh (1 2 3) for next north, despite the fact that 34th Street–Penn Station is an express station. Use NYCS Broadway-Seventh local (1 2), because only the local services can transport passengers from 28th Street to 34th. Likewise, when you list express service in next north/south, use the correct express template to designate the next express station. (For example, see 71st-Continental Avenue-Forest Hills (IND Queens Boulevard Line) and its source text.)

And sorry about the <noinclude> business, I was editing the infobox and i forgot to close the HTML tag. — Larry V (talk) 22:43, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Another little reminder: I've decided that having separate date and year fields for the infobox doesn't make much sense. It's really quite easy to combine the two and insert the links manually. So from now on, infoboxes should use the "open_date" field rather than the separate "open_month_day" and "open_year" fields. See Template talk:Infobox NYCS for more. — Larry V (talk) 01:41, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hoyt-Schermerhorn

I added the infobox for Hoyt–Schermerhorn Streets a while ago. And please, from now on use "open_date" rather than "open_month_day" and "open_year". See Template talk:Infobox NYCS. — Larry V (talk) 16:20, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Categories

Simply insert . For a slightly more detailed explanation, see Wikipedia:Category. --Larry V (talk | contribs) 13:56, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Reverting edits

Sorry I couldn't respond earlier, the IP I was using was abruptly blocked.

I could explain how to revert, but why do so when someone else already has? --Larry V (talk | contribs) 20:08, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Abraham Lincoln High School (New York)

Hey, I've just reverted some edits you made to the article on Lincoln High School in New York. First, I replaced the two names you had taken from the list of notable alumni. A quick google search of Sam Goldaper or Gene Federico will quickly show that although they don't yet have wikipedia entries, they are still encyclopedic and worthy of inclusion. Also, although the official website may not be currently maintained, it nevertheless is/was the official website and was used as a reference for the article, so should be included. I hope that clears things up. --Joshdboz 21:19, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] July 25

Although this case made major headlines, it is not considered notable

Not right, not even wrong, as even a quick skim of this or [1] would tell you. --Calton | Talk 00:21, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

If he's considered a notable birth for July 25, then how come I don't see him listed as a notable death for August 28?

Hmm, good question. Maybe, just maybe, this being a user-written and user-edited project, someone overlooked it, especially since it's already listed under "Events" and has been since the VERY FIRST VERSION of the August 28 page was created in December 2001:

*1955 - Black Mississippian Emmett Till is murdered, allegedly for whistling to a white woman and calling her baby. [2]

God almighty.

Pay attention. Don't make excuses. --Calton | Talk 14:28, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] New MTA Navbox

You've probably noticed the new large "navbox" that has appeared at the bottom of many of the NYC Subway articles. I see you removed it from Q (New York City Subway service), which I agree with. You might want to weigh in on the discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject New York City Subway#New navbox. I'd like to see a consensus for removing these bulky new navboxes, which duplicate quite a bit of what was already there in NYCS navbox. Marc Shepherd 00:34, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] New subway table

I have created a new subway table that I would like you to see. You can view my sandbox subpage or the WP:NYCS talk page. You can view the current discussion there. You can discuss any questions or opinions on the table there. I hope you like it, as I would definitely like it to have a home at all of the subway service pages. Thanks. --Imdanumber1 ( Talk | contribs) 19:44, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

On my my talk page, you wrote:

Did you put the table in any of the subway lines yet?

My answer is no. I only posted it at the WP:NYCS talk page and my sandbox subpage, where it originated. It is only an experiment, but hopefully, after a consensus is held, it will have a new home at the subway service pages. Hope that answers your question. If possible, check out the discussion going on at WP:NYCS --Imdanumber1 ( Talk | contribs) 16:11, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Late night and weekend service

Late night and weekend service disruptions are something that should definitely be added, only if they are constant. A service change that lasts a week shouldn't be added, as we will have to edit tedious info like this over and over again. We already have some G.O.'s that have been added to some pages, such as the G not going to Forest Hills, and the M train being rerouted to Sea Beach until November. Therefore, the changes should be reverted. Besides, we already were discussing an issue like this on the WP:NYCS talk page, and it was decided to use constant G.O.'s, not tedious ones that last only a week. Get back to me with your thoughts. If possible, let's also get into further discussion over my new table as I would like for it to have a new home at the subway service pages. Thanks. --Imdanumber1 ( Talk | contribs) 16:42, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Yugioh pages

Your edits to the card lists have been reverted. The Yugioh Wikiprojet has agreed to list the Capsule Monsters with the normal cards. If you have a problem then discuss it on the project page. As well, in the first series they are "Magic" cards, so the card lists show them as such. Drake

For future reference, when you make edits, be sure you have all the facts before hand. Rare Metalmorph is a Spell in the anime, but the real card is a Trap. Drake

  • Bring the matter to Benten's attention, or post of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Wikiproject page. Benten typically does a good job of supplying the original names of the cards, so this matter is his department. I just watch for vandalism and handle the episode guides now. Drake

[edit] New Subway Service Information table consensus at WP:NYCS

There is a new subway service table being proposed at the WP:NYCS talk page. See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject New York City Subway#Subway Service Information and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject New York City Subway#Hybrid Icons for discussion details, then see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject New York City Subway#Hybrid Icons for discussion details, then go to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject New York City Subway#Subway Service Information table consensus to cast your vote. I really hope you vote support. Thanks! --Imdanumber1 ( Talk | contribs) 01:26, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

They are only discussions at the WP:NYCS talk page, that's all. --Imdanumber1 ( Talk | contribs) 04:14, 24 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Links to the Yu-Gi-Oh! Wikia

Ranger, I have noticed in a lot of the separate card articles that the beginning of the introduction and the categories all link to the Yu-Gi-Oh! Wikia. I do not think that this should be, and that the links need to be in an External Links section of the article. I left this on the WikiProject talk page, but no one is answering it. Since you are an active Wikipedian, I figured you would have a good idea on what to do. Red Director 22:50, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] BEWD - Reply

Believe me when I say I wish the page could be kept like it used to be. But A-SOB-in-Black removed all that a long time ago, and he's an admin, so...what can I do? Believe me when I say I fought for the page, was even willing to put my account on the line, if you don't believe me, check out the talk page for his user. But he frankly doesn't give a crap. Come to think of it, if you want to rv the page, go ahead, I'll enjoy it while it lasts, but be warned he'll probably just rv it back. Drake Clawfang 22:58, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

You want it back, talk to AMIB. I want it back too, honestly, but I'm stilling going to listen to the admins. Seriously, talk to him, if he says it's ok I'll put if back myself. Of course, that's a big if. Drake Clawfang 23:21, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Edit comments

Hi. I noticed your edit comment in [4]. While I can certainly appreciate the frustration you are feeling, I don't think it's appropriate to call another editor a dumbass, even if you believe they are acting wrongly. -- RoySmith (talk) 23:56, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] R160A (New York City Subway car)

While your intentions were good, your method (copy-paste) was not: now an administrator has to selectively delete and undelete revisions, since the history is still in R160A (New York City Subway ca train). --NE2 13:20, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] R68

Please avoid using hostile edit summaries. Although his editing style is combative and tendentious, there's no need to add to the problem. Thank you. ThuranX 14:04, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Copyright violation

The text was copied from the external site and only minimally changed, not enough to remove the original copyright. --NE2 18:32, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Yes; you can write it in your own words. Information cannot be copyrighted, but its presentation can. --NE2 18:46, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] RFC for NE2

Hey there, Legendary Ranger. I noticed that you questioned on of NE2's edits on service history removal, according to a thread at WT:NYCPT and his talk page. I have opened up an RFC for him, hoping to correct his actions on consensus-breaching and questionable edits. Please feel free to leave any opinions on the RFC page. Have a good day! --Imdanumber1 (talk contribs) 12:55, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Subway cars

Welcome to Wikipedia. We invite everyone to contribute constructively to our encyclopedia. However, adding content without citing a reliable source is not consistent with our policy of verifiability. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. --NE2 18:55, 14 April 2007 (UTC)

News stories are reliable sources; I left the one in the Q article. These statements have been sitting around for a long time without sources. --NE2 19:00, 14 April 2007 (UTC)

Taking the time to make contributions to Wikipedia is cool, and I commend you for it. However, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a foamer site. Different rules. When you post, try to think about a) whether what you post can be verified. b) A lot of stuff (like car assignments to lines) is considered trivial outside of foamer circles. That doesn't mean you should never post it; it means you should consider why a general audience would be interested in it and what it means.

Reliable sources about transit cars include published press releases from transit authorities (you can quote from them, but don't just cut and paste their material), newspaper and magazine articles on-line, technical journal citations and also material that is available on a manufacturer's site (for example, Bombardier and Kawasaki have websites where they talk about subway cars). Also, Antenna Design is a company that designs subway cars - look at their website. Don't just cut and paste - write your own original material and refer back to your research. This takes practice, but it's worth it! 22:12, 15 April 2007 (UTC)Raryel

[edit] User:NE2

I have tried so many times. I am right now disengaging by avoiding him, but if he continues, I am going to request arbitration to block him for good. People like me and you should not have to deal with him. --Imdanumber1 (talk contribs) 20:02, 14 April 2007 (UTC)

Also, the project has been renamed to Wikipedia:WikiProject New York City Public Transportation. --Imdanumber1 (talk contribs) 20:03, 14 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Service history at 1 (New York City Subway service)

Rewriting the history was a good idea. Although we are allowed to use text from http://nycsubway.org, it is always best to work our way into the article by rewording text we find. That said, I myself will be doing the same to other articles as well as finding references. Good job, and keep it up. --Imdanumber1 (talk contribs) 00:22, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

NE2 isn't a bad guy, but sometimes he doesn't know how to "listen" to others. As a contributor, I myself learned to work with others, because as project, we must protect and respect each other, and it starts here. I know he means well, but sometimes I don't know if he realizes he is hurting others with his consistent editing. For advice from one user to another, try to be patient with him. It's hard, but he'll catch on...eventually. --Imdanumber1 (talk contribs) 21:13, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

It looks generally good, and not copied like the old text. There are some minor errors (for instance the "H" system was implemented before the Clark Street Tunnel opened [5]), but that can be taken care of in the future when references are found. --NE2 01:00, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Help add references to 1 (New York City Subway service)

I would like to know if you could help me out with the article by adding some references and getting rid of the proseline problem. NE2 is being really frustrating while I am trying to make the article pass GA, while I think he is doing this on purpose since he feels he should be making all the important edits and make others feel low. I really don't understand why while he was revamping the article he couldn't find references and perform some additional cleanup, but your help in making this fall through will be much appreciated. Thanks. --Imdanumber1 (talk contribs) 21:55, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

What he is doing at least is to try to improve the article quality, but going into guideline overkill is a bit over the top. We could try to convert it to prose or into a time line, according to Wikipedia:Proseline#What should be done?. I don't want to be a crybaby, but the only way that this is going to work is for NE2 to stop going into guideline overkill and to try to work with others instead of giving orders, and to stick and work together by having discussions and not making unilateral moves. This situation has been going on since the beginning of this year. --Imdanumber1 (talk contribs) 22:13, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

I didn't mark it as proseline; that was the GA reviewer. --NE2 23:01, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] R68

I removed your comment there. Please avoid making hostile statements like that, the vandal only gets 'rewarded' by your anger, and the rest of us see it as trolling, disruptive, and childish. thanks. ThuranX 23:30, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

SImply put, showing a vandal or troll that their actions are upsetting is giving them confirmation that their behaviors are being noticed and anger others. You're telling them they are achieving their goals. ThuranX 20:27, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
Not all vandals, some are just having fun by being jerks. Some however, are persistent vandals, with attention-seeking behaviors which you reward with your little attacks. ThuranX 20:36, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Retiring from Wikipedia

Ya know, I had thoughts of leaving Wikipedia because of all the stress I sustained. But I carefully thought, was I going to let NE2 destroy the Transportation WikiProject? Was I going to leave behind a lot of friends I made and helped? Was I going to leave Wikipedia and not play a part like I have for the past year? The answers to those questions are no. I will continue to help Wikipedia even I may have to work into the bone to help some people like NE2 go down the right path. I now plan to stick around here and continue what I have done. I will not be turned into the wrong by NE2. –Imdanumber1 (talk contribs  email) 00:42, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] NYCS stubs

I wonder why you removed NYCS-stub from some station articles. Some stations like 18th Avenue (BMT West End Line) still look short enough to be stubs. Tinlinkin 21:05, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

You never know when somebody would be able to add more info. There is no timetable for keeping or removing a stub template; an article of stub length 3 years ago that is presently of that length is still a stub. I think your removals were a bit too early, but I understand how some topics do not have the ability to be expanded upon quickly. Tinlinkin 21:48, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Edit war re. 1 train article

Your version is somewhat inferior because it contains proseline. While NE2's intention was good to rewrite the article, I don't know why he uses redirects, which makes hardly any sense. Anyway, the dispute is resolved, for now. –Imdanumber1 (talk contribs  email) 17:35, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Not until June 19, which is next Tuesday. –Imdanumber1 (talk contribs  email) 17:39, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] E service

I think it could be cited, possibly via annual reports. However, I accept that it might be impossible to cite, in which case it should be removed. Hopefully at least something like "due to capacity limits at Jamaica" could be cited. --NE2 20:46, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] WikiProject New York City Transportation article on Andrew Saul

Just a heads up that Andrew Saul (vice-Chairman of the MTA) has been nominated for featured article status here. Any input, comment and suggestions would be greatly appreciated, there is not that much info on him as it relates to the MTA, and being an !expert, I'm not quite sure how well I can flesh it out. Please feel free to comment and/or improve the article. Thanks! MrPrada 21:23, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] History section for the 1 train

I do not believe there is any real reason why it shouldn't have any subsections, but the people at the project agreed that it was an improvement when I fixed the proseline problem, which is what I need to do for the others. There are significant matters in each time period, so it made sense for me to break it down into such. If you feel that it is not an all important matter and you choose to revert it, I wouldn't object, but this is the way I see it. —Imdanumber1 (talk contribs  email) 17:55, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
