[edit] Andre the Giant

In your edit summary, you mentioned something about a picture next to Wilt Chamberlain and a quote from one of Andre's trainers (which is strange, since Andre did little to no athletic training). I would like to see these pieces of evidence. If you could link me, that would be great. However, in the time being, I will be putting the Meltzer height back on the page since it has proper citation.--Darren Jowalsen 00:09, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

The trainer I spoke of was one of his early wrestling trainers, I'll have to dig up the info on that, but I remember reading him saying that measured Andre at a legite 7'1" in his younger years. Andre did lose drastic height as he aged and put on weight.
Here is a pic of Andre next to Wilt Chamberlain: http://img134.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc73&image=35402_andrewiltarnold4zr_measured.jpg (with Arnold in there for some perspective, keep in mind Wilt has on a rather enormous wig on).
And the untouched version: http://img79.imageshack.us/img79/1474/andrewiltarnold4zr.jpg
This was also after he was experiencing back problems and lost some height from his peak.
I'm sorry, but Andre's listing height of ~6'10" as far as I am concerned is only applicable to perhaps the very last years of his life. TheSentinel 17:20, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
The problem I have is that photo was obviously included in Dave Meltzer's Wrestling Observer. When Meltzer wrote Andre's obitiuary, he cited many photographs and newspaper articles but made no mention of this. I find it very odd for him to ignore something he had published himself if he went through all the trouble to dig up information where ever possible. It seems he might have ommitted it from his account because there was something about it he learned later that discredited it. I still stand by the information I have presented. Perhaps we should include a section in the article that discusses this issue?--Darren Jowalsen 19:48, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
I definitely feel a section of the article should at least mention that there is contention over the height issue. IMO, it is very likely omitted it because it didn't jive with the case he making or he saw it as an anamoly. TheSentinel 20:29, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
Well, either way, we don't really know, perhaps we should ask Dave.--Darren Jowalsen 02:54, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
