TheBDJ (19 February 1982 - ) was born and raised in Kentucky. He was interested in science and math from an early age, influence largely by Star Trek: The Next Generation. He watched the show through its original first airing and became a huge fan of the Star Trek series. His love of math and science were never at a loss and would be a reason for his selection of major in college. He was also a heavy reader in his younger days and could be considered an autodidact.
[edit] Summer Camp
During 7th grade, TheBDJ took the SAT as part of Duke University's Talent Identification Program. His performance on the test was very strong in the mathematics portion of the test and was above average on the verbal part of the test. Because of the performance he achieved on the test, TheBDJ was able to attend VAMPY the following summer. The program offered through The Center for Gifted Studies at Western Kentucky University was not an entirely new experience since he had attended the Summer Camp for Academically Talented Middle School Students (SCATS) the year before. Over the next four years this program would give him a great advantage in school subjects involving Algebra, Computer Programming, Physics, and Chemistry.
His first year at the program focused on Algebra. This special math course was well-suited for him since the learning was done at each individuals own pace. Several hours a day were spent reading the course materials and practicing problems. There were some interesting course items as well, intended to stimulate some interaction as well as learning. These include the creation of a Small stellated dodecahedron made using a folded paper method in a style similar to Origami and String art for which he won a ribbon.
The second year at the program focused on Computer Programming. The course focused on Pascal and took a fairly normal lecture-lab structure. They also watched some computer-related movies including WarGames and The Net. For his final project in the class, he began work on a checkers program with the quite ambitious intention of making it a single player game where the computer could make effective decisions. The game was never quite completed, but the early AI attempt was his first foray into the area and one of the last until college.
The third year at the program his focus was turned to Physics. The course was taught by Doug Jenkins, a teacher at TheBDJ's high school and the creator of Dr J. The course was taught at a high school level and included many "fun" physics demonstrations. It was this class that would begin to effect his high school career as well and begin a trend of skipping some classes in high school.
The last year was focused on Chemistry. A fairly traditional approach in the lecture and lab part of the course was used; however, many of the labs were more qualitative then quantitative. This meant many labs were performed that would not have been done in most high school and college courses. Some of these labs included making a Sterno-like compound, distilling a small amount of alcohol, and "creating" water with a balloon filled with oxygen and hydrogen and a candle. A field trip was also made to Oak Ridge, Tennessee. This course would also effect his high school career, and he would seek out the teacher of this course for help with studying for his AP Chemistry exam.
[edit] High School
TheBDJ attended Warren Central High School in Bowling Green, KY. His entire high school career was highlighted by the succeses in various academic areas, especially math and science.
During his freshman year, he maintained a fairly "normal" schedule. The seven classes that year included: English I, Biology, Accelerated Geometry, Computer Programming, World History, PE/Health, and Spanish I. He made a rather strong showing in his computer programming course and was almost as impressive in Biology. Another important highlight from the year was his first year on the Academic Team, a type of Quiz Bowl competition. He led the freshmen team in points and was actually responsible for recruiting most the team. He earned a varsity letter for his participation.
During his Sophomore year his schedule included: English II, AP Physics, Anatomy and Physiology, Advanced Computer Programming, Accelerated Algebra II, Sociology, and Spanish II. This year was probably the most successful academically, and during the Science and Math Awards, he received the most oustanding student award for highest grade in Anatomy and Physiology, Advanced Computer Programming and Accelerated Algebra II. This was even more spectacular a year considering he was the only non-senior in AP Physics and one of only two or three sophomores in Anatomy and Physiology.
During his Junior Year, the high school's scheduling was changed to a 4x4 block schedule and his classes included: English III, AP Chemistry, Pre-Calculus, Multicultural Studies, "Keyboarding" (aka Typing), Drama, and Advanced US History. A much more normal year in school it was highlighted by receiving the Bausch and Lomb Award for showing a great excellence in the areas of Math and Science.
His Senior Year included: AP Biology, AP Calculus, AP English, Journalism (Newspaper Staff), Computer Repair, and he took World History at Western Kentucky University since AP World Civ was not offered his senior year. The year included a rare accolade in English for his Proficient Writing Portfolio. He was also named as the News Editor and later the Editor-in-Chief for the student paper. The Computer Repair course was a special course where he actually did a great deal of the class instruction. This year was a bit more relaxed then the Junior year, since he had decided to attend The Ohio State University. He graduated with a 4.0 in the Spring of 2000.
[edit] College
TheBDJ started college in the Fall of 2000 at The Ohio State University and arrived with the intent of getting his degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Unlike many of his friends, he would go on to complete the program he decided to start. His freshman year did not prove to be quite as successful as his high school career. This was largely due to his own inability or unwillingness to attend all his classes and study properly. After an abyssmal first year, he changed things around his sophomore year and improved his GPA so he could enter the major and begin his course work the following fall at the start of his Junior year.
Thanks to his course and lab work he has specialities and general understanding of the following subjects: Computer Network, Artificial Intelligence, Digital Design, VHDL, Verilog, Assembly language, Microprocessors, VLSI, Digital Signal Processing, and Computer Architecture. Two of his design projects included: designing a Robot made of Erector Set pieces and a Handy Board and a special senior design project to create a combined Global Positioning System and Inertial Measurement Unit, codenamed GIMPUS.
TheBDJ graduated in Fall 2004 with his Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
[edit] Professional Experience
In May 2005, TheBDJ began work at the USPTO as a patent examiner. In the time with the patent office, he has advanced his understanding of United States patent law, the Manual of Patent Examining Procedure and the various items covered in his area. These include display technologies (LCD, CRT, etc.), computer mice, and computer keyboards.
After his time at the USPTO, TheBDJ moved on to a more engineering related position. He took a job at a validation lab, reviewing modules for compliance with the FIPS 140-2 standard. This has given him the chance to get better oriented with Cryptography including Encryption, Cryptographic hash functions, and approved Pseudo-random number generators.
