A little about me

This user maintains a blog at http://astick.net/blog/
This user also lives on Planet Wikimedia.

Born and bred in Lancashire, England, I'm currently studying Materials Science at Downing College, Cambridge.

I made my first edit from this account in March 2005, though I'd been reading and making the odd anonymous edit for a long while before that. It is now 1174.7409721999 days later and I'm still here. Oh dear. I became an admin in October 2005. It's no big deal.

I has a bot. See what crazy things it's up to.

My username

My name comes from the short story "Beyond Lies the Wub" by Philip K Dick. A friend of mine who's really into sci-fi was reading it one day, and seeing the cover "wub" struck me as an amazingly funny word. I used it for my (now defunct) website, because of its similarity to web and it being short and memorable. When I registered I picked it as my pseudonym as well. It was a while before I actually read the story (and its article, since I didn't want to be spoiled), but I really enjoyed it when I did. Plus I was quite relieved, since I had been worried that "the wub" could have been some kind of monstrous villain, and I'd been giving people the wrong impression.

Of course, there's always an alternative explanation, as pointed out by this anon: [1]

My actions

The Entr'acte expresses its pleasure that Gilbert and Sullivan are reunited.

I invite scrutiny of all my actions on Wikipedia, especially those that involve admin privileges. If you have concerns then please contact me. Note to other admins: feel free to undo or overrule any of my admin actions if you think it will benefit Wikipedia. It would be nice if you drop me a message telling me, but you don't have to wait around for me to reply and I certainly won't shout at you for "wheel warring".

Data recovery

If you need access to a Wikipedia article that has been deleted, ask me. If it's not a copyright violation, libel, or personal information, and has not been deleted as a suspected WP:BLP violation, I will provide the text for you.

Note that using the text to recreate a deleted article automatically qualifies it for speedy deletion, and keeping deleted content hanging around in your userspace has gotten editors penalized before. But that's your problem.

Contact me

The best way to contact me is on my talk page. Please don't forget to sign! If you want to get in touch privately, or you are currently blocked, then e-mail me at thewub<döt>wiki<αt>googlemail<döt>com

You might (very occasionally) catch me on IRC as well. If you want to chat some other way (MSN/Windows Live Messenger, Google Talk, phone, carrier pigeon or whatever) then e-mail me first and I'll sort something out.

Quotes

"The problem with Wikipedia is that it only works in practice. In theory, it can never work." - Anonymous (from Raul's laws)

"On Wikipedia, there is a giant conspiracy attempting to have articles agree with reality." - Plautus satire

"...classifying AfD is akin to sorting the contents of your neighbours' trashcan after they've emptied their cat litter [the stuff that survives CSD or prod] into it, in the quiet confidence you'll find a few glass bottles worth recycling, and with a 1 in 10,000 chance of recovering that missing ring you reckon their cat might have swallowed." - User:TheGrappler

"Actually, there was once a cabal, but it got deleted..." - Andjam

The motto of the AWWDMBJAWGCAWAIFDSPBATDMTD is Est omnino difficile iudicare inclusionis meritum cuiusdam rei in encyclopædia cum ratio sciendi quid populi referat incerta sit, sed nihilominus aliquid encyclopædiam dedecet, which translates to, "it is generally difficult to judge the worthiness of a particular topic for inclusion in an encyclopedia considering that there is no certain way to know what interests people, but some topics nevertheless are not fit for an encyclopedia." This motto reflects the desire of these Wikipedians to be reluctant, but not entirely unwilling, to remove articles from Wikipedia.
