User:The JPS/Director templates
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Director templates are templates on all articles about films of notable directors. They are navigational templates: a genre of templates which is proving controversial, with many nominated for deletion.
Contents |
- Many users accessing an article about the work of a notable director would be interested in their other work.
- Chronological order are of a major interest to film fans. Practically all printed books about directors are in chronological order, not alphabetical.
- Many film enthusiasts are more interested in navigating chronologically through a director's body of work, not alphabetically.
- Categories should be retained to allow an alphabetical list and fully utilise the wiki's functionality.
- A separate List of... page or a section in the director's main article:
-
- forces the end user to switch an extra page for each change of article.
- are harder for end users unfamiliar with Wikipedia convention to find. 'See also' sections are best avoided, and the end user would not necessarily know that going two thirds of the way down a separate article would lead them to the list they require. We are producing an encyclopedia for others, not for the small selection of editors and even smaller percentage of trigger happy admins.
- It is essential that there is consistency.
-
- The current TFD process is failing this standard. There is no reason why one notable director should have a template when others are denied one.
- The templates should share a similar format. A horizontal format seems to be preferred as they take up less screen space. Including years seems quite popular. Directors with a larger body of work (Hitch and Spielberg, but not Kubrick and Lynch) could be split into decades.
Although ultimately POV, a notable director is identified through common sense. Controversies should be discussed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Films.
[edit] Status
- Deleted: Spielberg, Hitchcock, Kubrick and Tarantino
- Kept: Shyamalan, Lynch, Powell & Pressburger
- Not nominated for TFD: Anderson, Cronenberg
[edit] History
- April 2005: Template:Powell and Pressburger nominated and kept. See debate here.
- April/May: Template:Footer Movies M. Night Shyamalan nominated, and kept. see debate here
- early July: Spielberg nominated by K1Bond007. No consensus to delete (8 keep, 7 catify and 1 delete), so it was kept. see debate here
- July: Hitchcock and Kubrick on TFD. Spielberg then added to the same TFD (for consistency). see debate here
- July 19: Without any real consensus to delete, Radiant closes the TFD. However, he omitted removing them from the TFD mainpage.
- For a strive for consistency, The JPS informs deletionist User:Who of the recreation of Kubrick, and the existence of Tarantino.
- August 2: Who nominates Lynch. This TFD uncovers a deluge of support for keep votes, who also voice their regret at the deletion of the previous templates. see debate here
