This is a list of ninjutsu present in both the Naruto manga and anime that begin with a letter between S and Z. All ninjutsu are listed by the literal translation of their Japanese name.

[edit] Sand Clone

  • Name: Suna Bunshin, 砂分身, literally "Sand Clone" or "Sand Replication", Viz "Sand Doppelganger"

This jutsu creates a clone of the user out of sand. Perhaps the most versatile of all clones, this variant does not disperse when hit. When attacked, the affected area turns back into sand and snags the opponent. Major damage must be caused to actually disperse the clone (destroying its head, for instance); otherwise, it can simply reform.

While Gaara's functional sand clone is quite obviously a clone, Gaara can create non-functional clones that look just like him. These clones, however, are simply hollow shells, as seen in Gaara's fight against Rock Lee.

This jutsu is an alternative to Gaara's Desert Coffin; it gathers sand in the air and then targets the opponent from above, covering them in a rain of sand.

In the second movie, an alternate form of this jutsu was shown in which Gaara forms the sand into needle-like projectiles and fires them towards his opponent at a very high speed.

Once Gaara begins transforming into Shukaku, he can throw shuriken made from sand. Unlike regular shuriken, these are merely fast-moving balls of sand that cause blunt trauma, not actual wounds. They are thrown much faster than regular shuriken; therefore, the pain caused can be considerable.

Kabuto can concentrate his chakra to a prepared area on his body and begin regenerating the moment the targeted area becomes damaged. Unlike normal healing, this can actually restore dead cells.

This is simply a Transformation Technique used to transform the user into a beautiful, nude woman (or a woman in a bathing suit, as seen in episode 177 and the Naruto video games). Naruto uses it to distract his instructors, sometimes leading to an exaggerated nosebleed by the victim, and it is indeed annoyingly effective; even the Third Hokage swooned when Naruto used it on him. Naruto was forced to use this jutsu in order to receive training from Jiraiya. A variant of this technique is the Harem Technique, which uses varying numbers of shadow clones in combination with the technique to produce multiple clones of a nude woman.

This is Konohamaru's variation of the Harem Technique. He first creates a shadow clone and they both transform into two nude women in a very suggestive pose.

This is a variation of the Double Knockout Girls Technique made exclusively for girls who mock the first version. Konohamaru first creates a shadow clone and they both transform into two nude men in a very suggestive pose. The first time he used it on Sakura Haruno, he used Sasuke's and Sai's likenesses, gaining a perverted reaction from the kunoichi.

Similar to the Clone Technique, this jutsu creates clones of the user. Unlike the Clone Technique, these clones are actual copies, not illusions. The user's chakra is evenly distributed among every clone, giving each clone an equal fraction of the user's overall power. The clones are capable of performing jutsu on their own and can even bleed, but will usually disperse after one or two solid blows. They can also disperse on their own. Unlike other clones, they can't be detected by the Byakugan because the clones have the exact same amount of chakra and aren't made from any other substance, making them indistinguishable from the actual person. Sasuke Uchiha claims that the Sharingan can tell the difference during his battle with Naruto at the Valley of the End; however, in a battle between Itachi and Kakashi Hatake it was shown that the Sharingan does not reveal the original with just a glance; the Sharingan user would have to focus on his target.

Any experience the clones gain during their existence is transferred to the user once they are dispersed. This makes the technique ideal for spying, since the user can simply send a clone to spy on a target, then have the clone disperse itself without returning to pass the information back to the user. It's also useful for training purposes, since the total amount of experience the user gains is multiplied by the total number of clones being used to train. Using it in this manner is far more difficult, however, since a large number of clones are needed to make a significant difference in the training time. It's unclear if other types of clones possess this advantage.

This technique is considered dangerous because of the manner in which the clones are created. Because the user divides their chakra among the clones, the user could potentially use up all their chakra fairly quickly if the user is low on chakra or makes too many clones, such as Naruto does with Multiple Shadow Clone Technique, this jutsu's enhanced (and forbidden) form. Naruto is able to use this technique to the extremes that he does because of his tailed beast, the nine-tailed demon fox, which gives him an abnormally high chakra level. Even without the demon fox's chakra, Naruto can make quite a few clones, but nowhere near on the level he can when he has access to the demon fox's chakra (after the timeskip however he can make around 1000). The technique can also be dangerous if the user is injured or has some otherwise debilitating physical condition at the time of the cloning, since all of the clones will be created in roughly the same state.

[edit] Shadow Imitation Technique

The signature technique of the Nara clan, this jutsu allows the user to control their own shadow and merge it with their opponent's shadow, combining them. This links the movements of the user with the target; the target is subsequently forced to make any movement the user makes. The technique can even force unconscious or partially-conscious targets to mimic the user, as shown when Shikamaru Nara assisted an unconscious Temari in dodging an attack. On the other hand, the user also mimics any movements that the target is forced to make, such as recoil from being punched. It is an extremely versatile technique, as the user can contract and change the shape of their shadow, potentially grabbing multiple targets at once. The degree to which the user's shadow can be stretched is limited by its total surface area. Using the shadows of other objects, the user can extend their shadow beyond its normal range.

The amount of time for which an opponent can be held is limited by the user's chakra, since the user must constantly maintain the jutsu. The jutsu is also more difficult to maintain at greater ranges or for multiple opponents, since the user's shadow must be stretched constantly. At closer ranges, it requires considerably less effort on the user's part. Additionally, the target can force their way free with enough effort, though the amount of effort required to do so is considerable.

The Shadow Imitation Technique used to be called the Shadow Bind Technique, suggesting that the imitation aspect was devised later on and that the original technique could only hold targets in place. Shikaku Nara uses the former name of the technique when performing it.

After capturing an opponent with the Shadow Imitation Technique, the user can then further extend their shadow up to the target's throat in the shape of a hand, which chokes them to death. However, with an incredible amount of strength, the target can force the shadow hand off, as demonstrated in Shikamaru's fight with Tayuya, and against the Legendary Stupid Brothers, Fujin and Rajin.

The user of this jutsu can extend their shadow and create multiple tangible tendrils for various purposes. Such purposes can include using them as stabbing weapons, rope for binding an opponent, or extra appendages for throwing weapons.

It can also be used simultaneously with Shadow Imitation Technique, so it is possible to split the shadow and use both jutsus at the same time.

The user of this technique throws multiple large shuriken in such a way that the first shuriken hides the subsequent ones by blocking the line of sight. To the target, it appears as if only one shuriken was thrown.

Sasuke first used this technique against Zabuza Momochi. When he used it, he referred to the technique as "Wind Demon Shuriken, Shadow Windmill", which in the English version was dubbed as "Demon Wind Shuriken, Windmill of Shadows". His version used a transformed Naruto as the second shuriken, creating an additional surprise attack after Zabuza avoided the first thus releasing Kakashi from the water prison.

In the Naruto: Ultimate Ninja series, Naruto employs the above jutsu on his own.

[edit] Shadow Summoning Technique

After capturing a target with the Shadow Imitation Technique, the user summons shadowy tendrils from their opponent's body, controlling them in the same manner as Shadow Sewing, but from the opponent's body instead of the user's.

"Yose" is also a term used for the endgame move in go and shogi.

[edit] Shapeshifting Technique

This jutsu is used to perfectly clone a willing target by sacrificing another person. To perform the jutsu, the intended target must give up a fair portion of their chakra to create the duplicate (in its debut, the leader asked for thirty percent), after which the sacrificial body morphs into an exact clone of the target. The target is so perfectly cloned that every aspect of them will be copied, even kekkei genkai and weapons the target is carrying. The clone's abilities are proportionate to, and limited by, the amount of chakra given to it by the original. This makes the clone unable to use techniques that require large amounts of chakra to perform. The clone can either act autonomously or be controlled by the original. Once the sacrificial body dies, the Shapeshifting Technique will end and the person used will be revealed.

A technique used by puppet masters, this jutsu creates a shield using chakra emitted from panels that are released from a puppet's arms. This chakra shield can protect the user from several hazardous attacks; however, enough clotting force (such as Iron Sand) can clog up the puppet's arm joints and render the shield useless.

This jutsu causes sand to automatically surround and protect Gaara from harm, even if it's self-inflicted, regardless of whether or not he wants it to. The shield is capable of withstanding considerably strong attacks and projectiles, and can be hardened to a point where it's stronger than steel. It can be defeated by avoiding it completely with extremely high-speed attacks, or merely overcoming the shield with incredible brute force. The anime hints that a human soul must be imbued in the sand to perform this jutsu. The jutsu remains and bounds to its user forever.

Once Naruto clones himself using his Shadow Clone Technique, he and his clones throw a large number of shuriken from all angles at their opponent. It is similar in practice to the Shuriken Shadow Clone Technique used by the Third Hokage during his fight with Orochimaru.

By channeling his chakra into Asuma Sarutobi's trench knives, Shikamaru can use them to pin his opponent's shadow to the ground, immobilizing his opponent. The technique doesn't require any further effort on Shikamaru's part to maintain, but whether or not it has a time limit is unclear. With the opponent pinned, Shikamaru can then use his regular Shadow Imitation Technique to control them at his leisure.

Originally developed for spying activities, this technique can be done after some surgery and actual body modification. The user dislocates their joints then controls their softened body with chakra, allowing them to stretch and twist any part of their body at any angle, elongating and even coiling around their opponent. This can also be used to make the user's body more malleable and snakelike. Orochimaru can do this without surgical modification thanks to his various forbidden jutsu. In addition, his version allows him to stretch his body parts well beyond their normal length.

Gaara surrounds himself entirely in a protective orb of sand to guard against attacks. He then uses Third Eye to watch his opponents' movements and control sand as necessary to battle them. In addition to being extremely dense, this sand-sphere can form spikes from its surface to spear any would-be attacker who thinks that their own physical strength will be enough to penetrate it. Gaara can also use this technique to shield himself from his opponent long enough to perform his transformation into Shukaku, as demonstrated in his match against Sasuke Uchiha in the Chunin Exam.

After gathering his spider webbing into his mouth, Kidomaru spits it out into a wide web pattern. This web can envelop his foes and tie them down to a nearby surface. This stickiness is caused by him mixing his chakra with his body fluid, making the web stronger and more refined than steel. The technique is so refined that even after having left his body, his chakra will continue to flow through the thread to hold his opponent in place.

This technique makes a cocoon of web around the opponent, immobilizing and leaving them open for other attacks.

Emitting a stream of webbing from his mouth, Kidomaru will grab onto a nearby opponent then swing them around in a circle.

Unlike Kidomaru's binding webs, this technique produces a liquid that hardens into a golden metal. As well as being very strong, the metal is impervious to chakra. Kidomaru can form the metal into various shapes to use against his opponents, as well as quickly forming a protective shell over his body by excreting it from his pores.

When in his level two cursed seal form, Kidomaru expels Spider Sticky Gold from his mouth and gathers it to form a large war bow. He will then open his third eye on his forehead to increase his accuracy. Kidomaru can use basic attacks with the arrow or refine his attacks to meet specific demands, such as a strand of his web to guide it or different arrowheads to change speed or power.

If Kidomaru is in enemy territory and needs to rest while still remaining on guard, he can lay spider thread throughout the surrounding area. Most ninja will recognize the thread as common spider web; however, this thread runs all the way back to a finger on Kidomaru's hand. Slight movement against a webbing thread will pull it all the way back to Kidomaru's finger and alert him to the enemy's presence.

After gathering his spider thread into his mouth, Kidomaru will spit net-like cobwebs of the thread at his target. These nets will fly through the air, and upon hitting an opponent, will stick and bind the target to any nearby surface.

After gathering his spider thread into a ball in his hands, Kidomaru releases it in the form of a large spider web to catch his opponent. Once the target touches the thread, its stickiness will hold them in place.

This jutsu allows Kakashi to summon his own personal Ninken to perform special tasks. With this technique, the dogs can travel through the ground following the scent of their target, emerging when the target is found and holding them in place.

[edit] Summoning: Impure World Resurrection

  • Name: Kuchiyose: Edo Tensei, 口寄せ・穢土転生, literally "Summoning: Impure World Resurrection", English "Summoning Jutsu: Reanimation"

This forbidden summoning technique allows the user to revive the dead. The user must first sacrifice a living human in order to tie the deceased person's soul to the world (unlike the normal summoning technique, which only requires some of the user's blood). The sacrificed body is then surrounded with dirt and dust that compacts into the shape of the summoned soul's original body. The resurrected person then rises from the ground in a wooden coffin. At first, the person appears pale and dirty, as most undead are portrayed. The user has to restore their appearance through a special seal.

When revived, the person retains all of their memories. Because of this, the revived person is not completely under the user's control. With the same seal that restores the revived person's appearance, their free will can be erased, thus putting them under the user's complete control. The summoned person can't be killed and any damage to them regenerates. The soul must be removed from the body in order to kill the resurrected person. This technique can also be used to summon multiple people at once, depending on the amount of sacrifices and the chakra level of the user.

Orochimaru uses this technique during his battle with the Third Hokage in the Invasion of Konoha arc to summon the First and Second Hokages. He had also intended to summon someone else, but the Third prevented the final summon. In the anime, the coffin partially rises from the ground, and the symbol 四 on it suggests that the Fourth Hokage was the final summon. In the manga, the coffin did not appear as the Third stops the final summon before it can even be attempted, so the occupant of the coffin is left more ambiguous.

[edit] Summoning: Rashomon

This summoning creates a demonic form of the main gate of old Kyoto which is capable of blocking almost any attack. It was previously believed that two people were required to summon it, as both Sakon and Ukon did; however, Orochimaru has been able to summon three of these gates by himself with his Triple Rashomon. To do so, he simply uses both hands, instead of one as is common in a summoning.

[edit] Summoning: Toad Mouth Bind

This jutsu encloses the surrounding area with the esophagus of a great, fire-breathing toad from Mount Myoboku: Rock Lodging (妙木山・岩宿 Myōboku-san: Iwayado?). Jiraiya can then control the esophagus, causing it to expand, contract, or grow in whatever direction he wishes. In a filler arc, Jiraiya uses a variation of this jutsu when he summons an able-bodied toad's stomach to protect himself and Naruto from Kagero's Ephemeral Vengeance.

When first used, Jiraiya claimed that no one had ever escaped from this jutsu. Itachi Uchiha and Kisame Hoshigaki manage to escape, however. Itachi uses his Amaterasu to burn through the esophagus.

In the video games, parts of the esophagus also spew fire, which fits with Jiraiya's description of the animal the toad esophagus originates from.

[edit] Summoning Technique

The basic form of all summoning techniques, this jutsu requires a contract made with blood, hand seals, and the user's blood to summon an animal from another dimension. As an alternative to the normal hand seals, the same contract that appears on the ground during the summoning can be drawn by hand and activated, producing the same result. The type of animal summoned is determined by the contract. The blood is used as a signature to make the contract, which can be written on a scroll or tattoo. Once summoned, the animal can perform a task or help the user in battle.

The summon usually is subservient to the summoner; however, the more powerful summons, such as Gamabunta and Manda, demand respect and loyalty from their summoners. Manda even demands hundreds of live human sacrifices.

In addition to summoning animals, this jutsu can be used to summon weapons sealed away in a scroll of sorts, providing the user with more space to store weapons and less weight when traveling on extended missions.

With this technique, Sai can use his brush and scroll to give life to the pictures he draws, also giving them an increased size and the ability to move. This jutsu allows him to create birds for flight and lion-like creatures to attack.

The force of the vortex shatters anything drawn into it into millions of pieces.

This forbidden jutsu is a murder-suicide attack – killing both the user and the target. The user makes a one-handed seal with both their hand and the intended victim's. Two snakes are then summoned from the user's sleeve, biting both their wrists and killing them by deadly venom.

In Naruto: Narutimate Hero 3, when Anko performs this jutsu, two summoned snakes wrap themselves around her and her victim and lock themselves in that position by biting each others' necks. The snakes then detonate, causing major damage to Anko's opponent. For gameplay reasons, however, Anko is left unharmed.

This jutsu is Naruto's version of Sasuke Uchiha's Lion Combo, which he uses to defeat Kiba Inuzuka in the Chunin exam. Naruto uses his Shadow Clone Technique to make up for his lack of speed. In its debut, he makes four clones, which shout "U!" "Zu!" "Ma!" "Ki!" as they kick the opponent into the air, and the real Naruto finishes the combo with "Naruto Rendan!" and a kick from above. In the English dub, the corresponding shouts are "Na", "Ru", "To", "Uzumaki Barrage!" On each occasion Naruto has used this technique, he has performed it differently. Though Naruto's version of the technique is no more effective than Sasuke's, his is ranked higher due to his use of shadow clones.

This jutsu was made by Naruto to fight against the transformed Gaara. Basically, it is the same as the Uzumaki Naruto Combo, only 400 times larger. 1,999 shadow clones are formed, making 2,000 Narutos combined. Like the original, the clones shout the syllables of the technique, followed by the whole name, while performing it. Unlike the other, however, they end with punches instead of kicks. It is a technique requiring unbelievable amounts of chakra, but can easily pummel almost any opponent.

This jutsu allows the user to peel the face of another person off and wear it like a mask, effectively impersonating said person. In addition to copying the victim's face, it also copies their voice. The grisly after-effect of this is that the target loses their face entirely, as if it were dissolved clean off their head. Orochimaru uses it to infiltrate Konoha during the Chunin Exam arc and again to impersonate the Fourth Kazekage just before the invasion. Orochimaru can seemingly do this at will to mimic his original appearance.

This jutsu creates one or more identical copies of the user out of water. Like the Shadow Clone Technique, these clones are capable of attacking and using jutsu, but they are easier to defeat because they are only one-tenth of the user's power. Additionally, they can only be controlled within a certain distance of the user.

This jutsu is used to trap a victim inside a virtually inescapable sphere of water. The only downside to this technique is that the user must keep at least one arm inside the sphere at all times in order for the victim to remain imprisoned. Clones can be used in place of the actual person, provided that the clone is the one that performed the technique. This jutsu can't be performed without a sufficiently large body of water to supply the water for it. Neji Hyuga has been able to use his ability to release chakra from all of his pressure points to disrupt the flow of chakra inside the prison and break free. When Tenten is trapped in the water prison she indicates that she can't breathe. Despite this, other characters have been shown remaining within it for long periods of time without incident and are even capable of talking.

This jutsu is used when an opponent is knocked into water. From the water, five sharks are created and used to attack the opponent. The sharks must be created in a large amount of water. The user must keep his hand on the water or else the sharks will fall apart, since they are made from chakra. They first attack one-by-one, with each attack Kisame said "First Meal" up to "Fifth Meal". If the sharks suffer severe damage they can quickly regenerate themselves, making this a powerful technique.

Using this jutsu, the user creates a huge current of water in the form of a serpentine dragon and directs it towards a target. The water used to create the dragon must be present to perform the technique. This technique requires 44 hand seals to perform, more than five times that of almost every other jutsu shown in the series. In the manga, the Second Hokage needs only one hand seal to perform this technique, a testament to his skill. Shibuki could perform this technique using few hand seals in an order that is completely different from hand seals seen to use it in other instences, ending with an unknown seal.

This jutsu summons the ten masterpiece puppets of the first puppet user, Monzaemon. Chiyo once used it to defeat an entire castle. The puppets were designed as a set, with several special features that combine two or more puppets to create devastating combos, most notably the Three Buddhist Treasures Vacuum Destruction.

In addition to their combat abilities, the puppets have several features designed to seal chakra, leaving their enemies unable to perform jutsu. Each puppet is controlled by a single chakra string from one of the user's ten fingers.

A variation on the Wind Release: Rasengan, this jutsu reshapes the wind chakra used in the technique into a large, four-pointed shuriken. The sphere in the center remains intact. The technique is only half-complete, so it dissipates a few seconds after it is formed. Additionally, despite its shape, it can't be thrown like a shuriken. It has to be used against the opponent at point-blank range to work. If used successfully, however, it traps its victim in a swirling sphere of wind chakra that attacks the victim with blades so minuscule that they hit at the cellular level and sever the chakra and nerve channels, making it more like poison. It seems to be a dangerous jutsu for the user, as Naruto's arm suffered a limited amount of cellular damage in addition to multiple broken bones; repeated use could render him unable to use chakra altogether. Tsunade has prohibited Naruto from using this jutsu due to these possible consequences, but Naruto is confident that he knows his own limits.

This jutsu combines Naruto's wind-based chakra with the Rasengan, maintaining the stability of the previous version while increasing its power by a significant degree. During his training, Naruto was able to create a massive crater in the ground. Unlike the regular Rasengan, which requires a single clone to help form the sphere, this version requires a second clone to shape the wind-based chakra. Despite the damage it can currently cause, the technique is still only half complete. A variation of this technique is the Wind Release: Spiraling Shuriken.
