[edit] Removing SmitRem infections
- Make sure you aren't running any rogue antispyware programs by checking the rogue antispyware program list
- If you are recieving messages in your tray, or on your desktop, saying you are infected with spyware, download SmitFraudFix and SmitRem
- Download SmitFraudFix
- Unzip to a folder, for example c:\Smitfraudfix\
- Download SmitRem.Exe
- Save to your desktop
- Download SmitFraudFix
- Download AdAware SE
- Install and update definitions
- Download Spybot S&D
- Install and update definitions
- Download spywareblaster
- Install and update definitions
- Download Ewido
- Install and update definitions
- Download a backup of Wininet.dll from [1]
- Restart your computer
- Before the first windows screen appears, start pressing f8
- Select Safe mode from the boot options menu, and hit enter.
- If you downloaded SmitFraudFix and SmitRem:
- Login to the account you saved the SmitRem program to the desktop.
- Open the SmitRem folder and open the RunThis.bat file.
- (note:you will be taken a series of screens, and your desktop icons may disapear during this process. This is normal)
- Open the SmitRem folder and open the RunThis.bat file.
- If you have multiple user profiles, logout (don't restart - you still need to be in safe mode) and run the SmitRem.bat file in each account.
- Once the above has been done:
- Login to the account you saved the SmitRem program to the desktop.
- Run the antispyware applications you downloaded and installed one at a time - this may take a while.
- Restart your computer into normal mode.
- Hopefully at this point you will have removed the spyware, if this is not the case, you may want to download HiJackThis and and post a log on a forum such as http://forums.spywareinfo.com
