Theoderich van Are

Count Theoderich van Are (1087-1126) was a nephew of bishop Udo van Toul, has uncle bestowed upon him Heerlen and Steinfeld in 1065 [1]. He was made count of Are by Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV [2].

Theoderich had six sons, three of whom became part of the clergy. He was succeeded by his first son Lotharius.

His second son, Gerhard, was from 1124 till 1169 Provost of st. Kassiusstift in Bonn, and from 1154 till 1160 Provost of the St. Servaas in Maastricht.

Theoderich start building the Pancratiuskerk in Heerlen. Most likely he also build and lived in the Schelmentoren in Heerlen.
