Thebarton Senior College

Thebarton Senior College is an adult re-entry public secondary school located in Thebarton a suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. The school was established on the site in 1919, with adult re-entry students accepted in 1988 and then formally becoming an adult re-entry college in 1990.

The College grounds and facilities were upgraded in 2005. It has a gymnasium, cafeteria, resource centre, study centre and up-to-date technology for use by staff and students

The students are adults (16+) who have returned to complete their secondary education, undertake bridging or vocational programs or learn English in the New Arrivals Program. Many are part-time and over 1000 students may access courses in each academic year. The College draws its students from all parts of the greater metropolitan area but particularly from the central and north western side.

[edit] New Arrivals Program

The College is the only adult New Arrivals Program provider in South Australia. The New Arrivals Program is an intensive English language acquisition course for newly arrived adult migrant and refugee students. While the focus of the program is to provide non-English-speaking students with the level of language proficiency needed to undertake future SACE studies, mathematics, science and computing are integral to the curriculum and also have a language emphasis. This course is SACE accredited (4 units) under the non-compulsory section of the SACE.

A similar program is ESL for Living and Working in Australia. It is a course for students from non-English-speaking backgrounds unable to access the New Arrivals Program or Stage 1 ESL programs. It is offered in full-time or part-time mode at Stage 1 of SACE and covers the subject areas of ESL, Food & Nutrition, Work Education, Computing and Consumer Studies.
