The Young Women's Leadership School of Queens

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Young Women's Leadership School of Queens (TYWLS) is entering its third year of existence as a fully public school in District 28 of the New York City Department of Education. It is located in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens.

The principal, Avionne Gumbs, has forged ahead with the return of single-sex education in the United States -- with much thanks to Anne Rubenstein-Tisch, President of The Young Women's Leadership Foundation [1]

The following is an excerpt of the very beginnings of TYWLS-Queens from the foundation's website:

On September 8, 2005 girls in grade 7 made history as members of the first class of students at The Young Women's Leadership School of Queens. Principal Avionne Gumbs welcomed her new students and their families in a white rose ceremony and talked about the importance of parental involvement and student leadership. The girls' emotions ranged from excited, nervous and anxious to happy about wearing a new uniform. Parents were eager to have a safe haven with high academic standards available to their daughters in their neighborhood. One parent exclaimed "Thank you for giving my daughter the opportunity to learn in an environment free from some of the things that take place in a regular JHS. Thank you for bringing TYWLS to Queens". This new public school is temporarily housed at PS 40 on Union Hall Street in Jamaica, Queens. There are plans underway to move the school into its own building for the start of the next school year. YWL Foundation supports the school with a full-time Field Representative who is responsible for community outreach, partnership development, college awareness and serving as a liaison to the organization.

TYWLS and all sister schools are uniform schools. The TYWLS Queens school uniform consists of a navy blue bolero/sweater and navy blue pants/skirt.
