The fifth UK series of The X Factor is due to be broadcast on ITV from August until December 2008. Auditions in front of producers were held in April/May, with callbacks in front of the judges in June. Again, series 5 gained media attention even before auditions in front of the judges began, similar to the previous series a year before. Press attention was largely over the changes made to the cast, most notably, the departures of Sharon Osbourne as a judge[1] and Fearne Cotton as presenter of spin-off show The Xtra Factor.[2]
Cotton is being replaced by presenter and close friend, Holly Willoughby[2]. Currently, no replacement for Osbourne has been announced.

[edit] Judges
Currently, confirmed judges for series 5 are: Simon Cowell, Dannii Minogue and Louis Walsh. On 6 June 2008 (six days before filming was due to begin at the London auditions) ITV announced that long-standing judge Sharon Osbourne had left the show.[1][3] Media speculation over the reasons for Osbourne's departure alluded to rising tensions between she and fellow judge Dannii Minogue, as well as disputes over pay.[3][4] At the beginning of series 4, a clip of the show that aired at the ITV Autumn Launch showed Osbourne to claim that she felt series 4 was "her year to win", adding: "If I don't win I will fire myself – before someone else does!". Osbourne did not win series 4 — the title was taken by new judge Dannii Minogue with her act Leon Jackson. On 9 June 2008 it was reported that the short-term option for a fourth judge is to use guest judges during the audition stages, buying more time for producers to find a permanent replacement for Osbourne.[5]
[edit] Presenters
Presenter Dermot O'Leary returns to host the main ITV1 show, choosing to leave other projects in order to "concentrate" on The X Factor[6]. Xtra Factor presenter Fearne Cotton left after series 4, having only presented for one series, to be replaced by Holly Willoughby.[2]
[edit] Sunday results show
The live stages of series 5 are proposed to be divided over two shows: a "performance show" on the Saturday night, followed by a results show 24 hours later, on the Sunday. The move (as alleged in the press) is in light of rival TV show Strictly Come Dancing having already adopted this format. Media reports around early June 2008 told of an apparent clash between executive producer Cowell and the show's series producers over the prospect making the Sunday results show a pre-recorded broadcast, filmed on the Saturday night, and aired the next day, to save money. Reports claimed that Cowell was strongly against this idea and wanted to keep the Sunday results show live to maintain entertainment appeal. It is now believed that the live stages will either be broadcast with a live Sunday results show, or go back to the original format of announcing the results after the performance show on the Saturday night.[7][8]
