The Wuz

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wuz was the official jazz quartet of the Boston Symphony Orchestra during the 1970s. The name was a pun on its repertoire; it played "music that was, not music that is." Bass player Tiny Martin opened concerts joking that the band knew no current tunes, "but if it was written before 1945, we might know it."

Originally, the musicians played for their own enjoyment, but as the Boston Symphony began to sanction increasing numbers of chamber music ensembles, they sought official recognition. This was initially spurned.

Tom Gauger played percussion.

Unfortunately, with the passing of time, the group moved their separate ways. They no longer play together, and a reunion tour is not expected.
