The film is set in Inglewood, California, a suburb of Los Angeles commonly referred to by its inhabitants as "The Wood." The story opens as a marriage is about to get underway, but the groom, Roland (Taye Diggs), has disappeared and it's up to his two best friends, Mike (Omar Epps) and Slim (Richard T. Jones), to find him. Interspersed with scenes of their search are a series of flashbacks featuring the three friends during their junior high and high school years.
