A young boy named Joey is taught strange magic tricks by Uncle Devil, the host of a Bozo The Clown/Mister Rogers-like and, obviously demonstrative, children's show. Attracted to the show and magic's true nature, Joey performs magic tricks that turn the world around him stranger and stranger, while his Mom and Dad are oblivious to everything that happens. They are busy working to perpetuate more important lives—their own.
The story climaxes when Uncle Devil teaches Joey (and all the other kids watching at home) the Big Magic Trick, using an ancient-looking urn, but the trick doesn't seem to work. The TV show ends, the world seemingly returns to normal, and Joey is called to dinner. As Joey runs out of the living room, a comic-looking cockroach crawls out of the urn and winking, twists its whiskers.
