The True Meaning of Smekday is a childrens' book by Adam Rex that is highly recommended by The New York Times[1]

The book is about an eleven year old girl named Gratituity "Tip" Tucci. When her mom is abducted by aliens from a mole signal on her neck, Tip has to survive on her own. Suddenly, those aliens, called boov, arrive and try to take over earth, which they call Smekland. Since their leader is Captain Smek, the boov rename holidays after him (i.e. Christmas = Smekday). On "Moving Day", Tip decides to drive to Florida instead of being transported like all the other people. She soon makes friends with a boov, J. Lo, who is actually friendly. They journey across the United States running into all kinds of problems and adventure including the fact that J. Lo accidentally summoned the Gorg, even eviler aliens. It is up to Tip and J. Lo to find Tip's mom, save the world, then hopefully save themselves.
