[edit] Plot summary
The Tigers of Mompracem are a band of rebel pirates fighting against the colonial power of the Dutch and British empires. They are led by Sandokan, the indomitable Tiger of Malaysia, and his loyal friend Yanez de Gomera, a Portuguese wanderer and adventurer. After twelve years of spilling blood and spreading terror throughout Malaysia, Sandokan has reached the height of his power, but when the pirate learns of the existence of the Pearl of Labuan, his fortunes begin to change.
[edit] Trivia
- According to German scholar Bianca M. Gerlich, the historical Sandokan and his family lived along the Kinabatangan, one of the largest rivers in Borneo. He was a Bornean of noble descent and the town of Sandakan may have been named after him.
- Others claim the deeds of the fictitious Sandokan seem to be loosely based on the exploits of Rentap, a Dayak chieftain resisting James Brooke from his hideout at Mount Sandok in Sarawak.
- Salgari based the character of Yanez on himself.
- Marianna is based on one of Salgari's old flames, a young British woman.
- Mompracem appeared on maps from the 1600s to the 1800s but has since disappeared. Some believe it vanished beneath the waves. Giulio Raiola, claimed in his book "Sandokan, mito e realtà", (Sandokan, Myth and Reality) that the present day island of Keraman is the Mompracem of legend.
