The Test is the 40th episode of the FOX television series, The O.C. The episode was written by John Stevens and was directed by Michael Lange. It originally aired on Thursday February 17, 2005. On the Region 2 DVD, it is called The Father Knows Best.

Seth is using television to to take his mind off whether or not Summer and Zach had sex in San Diego. Turns out they didn't, because Zach believed in abstinence before marriage, but Zach tells Seth that he plans to do it when he and Summer travel to Tuscany.

Caleb wants to adopt Lindsay, Julie wants to avoid this because she thinks Lindsay is after his money. She convinces Caleb to do a paternity test and tells Lindsays mother, Renee, about it. Renee and Ryan try to talk Lindsay out of the adoption. Lindsay doesn't understand why. Caleb postpones the announcement of the adoption.

Julie announces her new magazine, "Newport Living", made in cooperation with Kirsten.

Marissa doesn't know how to tell Summer about her relationship with Alex. Finally she admits it.

The FBI is after Rebecca and Sandy wants to protect her, which leads to problems with Kirsten. Sandy tells Kirsten that it isn't a choice between protecting Her and protecting Rebecca. Only Kirsten says it is. And it's obvious he has made that choice. Kirsten talks to Rebecca, asking her if she was willing to let Sandy risk everything for her. Rebecca takes off, leaving a note for Sandy saying she talked to Kirsten and couldn't let him risk everything. Sandy confronts Kirsten asking her what she said. After Kirsten tells him that Rebecca admitted that she was still in love with him, Sandy angrily replies that that is not how he feels.
