The System Within is a fictional story based upon true events about men who have been wrongly imprisoned under United States federal conspiracy laws.
The highly anticipated urban drama, “The System Within” was released nationwide in March 2007. The movie is the brainchild of The System Within Film Production, LLC and Tariq Alexander, a former model turned actor-producer who makes his film debut in “The System Within”. Alexander is joined by seasoned actors, Hawthorne James (The Five Heartbeats, Speed, Seven), Bryce Wilson (Beauty Shop, Trois, Weekend Vibe) Robert Miano (Donnie Braco, Thick As Thieves) and acting newcomer rap star Chingy (Pullin me Back, Dem Jeans) along with lead cast members from a 2003 talent search. The script is based on actual experiences of men who have been incarcerated under federal conspiracy laws mostly for drug trafficking, and the systematic elimination of their constitutional rights. As a continuum, “The System Within” reveals how corporations profit from racial profiling, negative capitalism, and institutional slavery stripping our youth of economic alternatives and moral values. Although there have recently been stepped up effort by the judicial system to review both mandatory sentencing and conspiracy laws, and even the overturning of some conviction, this film is seen by some activists as a new weapon in the arsenal. The System Within Film Production Company in its efforts to provide economic alternatives and opportunities to urban communities, first toured the nation by bus to audition thousands of talented but unknown actors, singers and dancers to participate in the movie. Forty audition winners were selected and starred in, “The System Within”. Because of the overwhelming response to this innovative gateway to Hollywood, the System Within has created a platform for unknown actors, singers, models, and dancers to promote their talents through a new branch of its organization “TSWPLACE .COM that is similar to My Space. It is free to anyone to join at www.tswplace.com thus creating a venue to help even more aspiring entertainers and support personnel get into the business.
Alexander explains, “‘The System Within’ is not just a movie, it’s a movement”. The System Within Entertainment Network or TSW PLACE is a member only referral program that allows anyone to join and receive specialized attention. Members can audition for future project and receive insider information and opportunities in the entertainment industry.
The movement leg of the organization is it community outreach foundation, named “Project 87” (named for the year in which many mandatory sentence laws went in to effect). Project 87’s purpose is to bring attention to issues like the forgotten people who are still incarcerated and needing legal assistance and the bare necessities of life; the people and businesses deprived of opportunities who need guidance and loans to bring their dreams to reality; “We want to help the urban communities that want to make improvements” says Alexander. “We want to help them create new businesses and opportunities for themselves”.
The second movie produced by The System Within Film Productions is "The Stick Up Kids" due out in Spring of 2008. This movie deals with these community empowerment issues, the gentrification of the inner cities and the dislocation of its residents. “This film and all our other projects aren’t about any one person, but about an entire tradition”, Alexander said. “We’re not concerned so much about credit for ourselves, but about helping jump-start opportunities for others”.
