The Superpowers won a Boston Music Award in 2006 for Most Outstanding World Music Act and were voted the Best World Act 2007 in the Boston Phoenix.
The band, which formed in 2005 under the name "The Boston Afrobeat Society" initially tagged itself as a Fela Kuti cover band. According to their MySpace, they describe themselves as "an 11 member, 21st century dance band".[1] The music fits most easily into the genre of afrobeat. However, the name change was attributed to the fact that members of the band felt that by being called "The Boston Afrobeat Society", it would limit them in the types of music that they could play.
Concerts are extremely high energy and the music is so physically and emotionally powerful that it practically pulls audience members with incredible force towards the dance floor to shake their bodies in rhythm along with the funk, jazz, and soul inspired music.
