"The Special Two" is the third single released from Missy Higgins' debut album The Sound of White. The single was released in Australia on April 4, 2005 and entered the ARIA singles chart at #2 unable to topple Jesse McCartney's "Beautiful Soul" from the top spot. The song was written by Higgins herself.

The single sold over 35,000 copies, certified Australia Gold status. Influential Australian music industry representative Barry Bissell is noted as regarding this as Missy's finest work ever.

"The Special Two" is a song of apology regarding the relationship between Higgins and her sister Nicola.[citation needed]

The song was written when Missy locked herself in her bedroom (the bungalow) at the back of her parents' house with a bottle of wine (which Higgins changed into "whiskey" for the lyrics of the song for rhythmic purposes). At the time her room was covered with exotic material, posters and the smell of incense. She wrote most of it at her favourite time, the dead of night when there were no distractions, no one to catch up with, just her in her own little self-indulgent cocoon. The particular night she was feeling very sorry for herself, she hadn't left the room in days and it was 4am. She occasionally crawled out for a piece of toast and to get some more wine, but she couldn't function properly until the song was finished. It was a very dark few days for her as she had hurt her sister and wanted to apologise as she was unbelievably sorry that she had let both Nicola and herself down.

Her first performance of it was at a concert, and her sister was in the front row. Higgins said it felt very liberating to tell such a personal story in front of many strangers, that no-one knew the true story other than her sister. Luckily this song "dug her out of the hole" in the end.[1]

One of the b-sides featured with the single is a cover of a Skyhooks classic "You Just Like Me Cause I'm Good in Bed".
