The annual winter dance ("The SnO.C.") is approaching and Seth and Ryan need dates. Seth encourages Ryan to ask Lindsay, but Ryan is surprisingly hesitant. He doesn't know how Lindsay feels about him, and he worries because every time there is an event in Newport, something bad happens. In class, Ryan attempts to ask Lindsay to the dance, but she stops him before he can start, saying that she wants to make sure their friendship lasts, and that they are lab partners, and shouldn't date on top of that.

On her lunch break, Marissa takes a make-out break with D.J. back home. He asks her if she will invite him to the dance, and she says no, because her mother is hosting the event. Just then, Julie comes home and finds the two of them in bed. Julie fires D.J. on the spot and tells him to stay away from her daughter. Marissa says she won't stop them from seeing one another.

At the office, Sandy informs Kirsten that Caleb's trial has been fast-tracked. Kirsten wonders how she hadn't noticed her father's criminal behaviour. Sandy isn't so sure that Caleb is guilty of bribing Rene Wheeler, the city councilor, as the DA suggests. But Rene didn't say anything informative during her deposition, so Sandy vows to find her and speak to her elsewhere.

Back at school, Zach and Ryan meet at the coffee station. Zach talks to Ryan about Summer and Seth's relationship. He feels that Seth doesn't even need to ask Summer to the dance; that the night will turn out to be about the two of them whether or not Seth asks Summer to go. Ryan understands. Zack asks Ryan if Seth is over Summer. Ryan says that he thinks so, or at least that he wants to be over her.

At the Bait Shop, Seth approaches Alex about going to the winter ball with him. Alex tells him that she thinks he got the wrong idea about the kiss they shared the other night, and that she doesn't do school dances. To prove that the kiss meant nothing, Alex kisses a man and a woman in the club in front of Seth. Later at school, Seth and Ryan discuss how crazy women are. Ryan is still bummed about Lindsay turning him down.

On the way to class, Ryan runs into Marissa, who has a giant stuffed penguin for the winter ball. He helps her carry it into the school. On the way they do a little dance and Ryan chases her around the courtyard. From above, Lindsay and Seth watch. Seth tells her that it is not too late to accept Ryan's invite to the dance. Lindsay thinks he'll think she is crazy if she changes her mind. In school, Marissa asks Ryan to go to the dance with her, just as friends so they don't have to be alone. He accepts. Out in the hall, Seth asks Summer for advice where Alex is concerned. She tells him to cool it down and Alex will respond. Zach sees them laughing and chatting and he assumes the worst.

In a parking lot across town, Sandy confronts Renee Wheeler as she is walking to her car. She is not happy to see him, but after his questioning, she does not deny having an affair with Caleb. Sandy asks why she is risking legal trouble when it would be so easy to explain the situation to the DA. She gets into her car and leaves.

Back at school, Lindsay tells Ryan that she has changed her mind, and that she would be interested in going to the dance with him after all. Ryan tells her that he is already going with Marissa, to which Lindsay replies that she didn't really want to go anyway. In the hall again, Zach tells Summer that he won't be able to go to the dance anymore, and that she should just take Seth.

At The Bait Shop, Seth arrives to work, and is not in a chatty mood. He is playing it cool as Summer suggested. After an awkward moment, Seth announces that he is quitting. Alex thinks it is because she wouldn't make out with him, but Seth blames it on a lot of outside commitments at home and at school. Alex accepts his reasoning and pays him what he is owed. She says goodbye and Seth leaves, very confused.

That night, Seth decides to stay home and watch a Kung-Fu movie instead of go to the dance. When Sandy and Kirsten see this, they sit down with him and decide they too would like a movie night. Seth is not pleased and decides to go to the dance instead. Sandy tells Ryan never to underestimate a parents ability to mortify their child.

Ryan and Seth drop by Marissa's to pick up Marissa, and Summer is also there. The four of them are dateless and going to the dance as a group of friends, just like old times.

Later, at the dance, Julie and Jimmy are chaperoning. Julie remarks that she is now happy that Marissa is dating Ryan. Little does she know, Marissa is merely dancing with Ryan as a friend. Meanwhile, Seth and Summer dance after Summer gives in.

Zack shows up at the dance to see Seth and Summer slow dancing, and seems to realize that Summer and Seth are one of those couples that will "always be a couple," whether or not they're actually dating. He leaves and goes to the Bait Shop. There, Zack asks Alex for advice on Summer, oblivious to the fact that she knows Seth and Summer. Alex advises Zack to fight for Summer, otherwise she'll never fall for him. Near the end of the conversation, Alex realizes that Zack is talking about Seth and Summer's relationship, and seems to contemplate making a move of her own.

DJ shows up at the dance, and Marissa dances with him. Julie is perturbed, and Ryan leaves to see someone.

Zack comes to the dance to find Seth and Summer sitting far apart on a bench. He punches Seth, and Summer goes into a concerned girlfriend-like mode. Alex shows up and Summer grudgingly allows her to take over.

Later, Summer and Zack hang out, Seth and Alex kiss at the Bait Shop, and Lindsay and Ryan play video games in the pool house.

However, Renee comes to Sandy to talk about what would happen if she came clean. Suddenly, Sandy is overwhelmed with shock. Lindsay walks out, "Mom, what are you doing here?"
