Founded in September 1982 by Satish Kumar in Hartland, Devon, The Small School is a secondary school (age 11-16). Satish Kumar, who also founded Resurgence magazine, lived in a rural village and did not want to send his 10 year old son to the nearest secondary school either in Bude or Bideford. The Small School is known for its pupils growing, cooking, and serving their own lunch. Unlike other state schools, The Small School has a choice of afternoon options including: Photography, Yoga, Pottery, Woodwork and much more. The Small School began with 8 children and has grown to as many as 35, although the school currently only has 25 students enrolled. It belongs to Movement for Education on a Human Scale.
