[edit] Location
The Skirrid Mountain Inn is situated within the small village of Llanfihangel Crucorney, five miles north of the market town of Abergavenny on the A465 Abergavenny to Hereford road.
[edit] Claims to Fame
The Skirrid Mountain Inn claims to be the oldest pub or inn in Wales[citation needed], with a history dating back to the Norman conquest, over 900 years, and amongst the very oldest four historically documented pubs[citation needed] in the United Kingdom.
It was used as a rally point for the rebel uprising lead by Owain Glyndwr in 1400 and he is said to have personally rallied his troops in the cobbled courtyard before raiding nearby settlements during the decade long uprising.
The first floor room was used as a courtroom and the 'hanging judge', Judge Jeffries, sat to hear cases as part of the local assizes, passing sentence on sheep stealers and petty criminals, some of whom were later hanged over the inn's stairwell from a wooden beam on which rope marks remain. Maybe as many as 180 such hangings took place here.
It also claims to be the home of several ghosts and supernatural occurrences or paranormal activities and has been featured on TV's Most Haunted with Yvette Fielding.
[edit] Attractions
The inn looks out onto the Skirrid Mountain to the east and the Black Mountains, Wales to the west, part of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The valley of the River Usk, River Wye and River Monnow all pass close by. Offa's Dyke Path runs close by also.
