The Showdown is the 49th episode of the FOX television series, The O.C.. The episode was written by John Stephens and was directed by Michael Fresco. It originally aired on Thursday, May 5, 2005.

Dynamite with a lit fuse: Kirsten goes on a bender now that Carter's gone, Ryan can't figure out what's up with Marissa, Caleb hits Julie with divorce papers, and the Seth-Zach rivalry turns into War of the Weirds.

Sandy finds Kirsten drinking "tomato juice" for breakfast and talks to her about taking a weekend off. After some conversation, Kirsten says they should drive up on Sunday morning and she'll try to take Monday off. She leaves her unfinished juice in the sink and Sandy picks it up and takes a sniff of what she's been drinking, a mixture of Vodka and tomato juice.

Marissa is examining the bruises Trey gave her from the night before. Then he calls. She tells him to stop calling her and hangs up. Trey and Jess are in his apartment. Trey refuses sex with Jess and kicks her out.

Seth and Summer have a chat about his Spring Break adventure. Summer tells Seth that she saw him on the tv. She says she's not angry, but that Seth just won't change and that she kissed Zach. Seth is taken aback and wants to know if anything else happened between them. Summer assures him there was only a kiss. Seth asks 'So, what does this mean?" and she replies, "I don't know, but it shouldn't be this hard."

Julie is preparing a surprise breakfast for Caleb. Eggs Benedict. He says he already ate and that she is crazy for offering such a meal to a man with his heart condition. Julie is physically distraught and there is obvious tension between the couple.

Ryan kisses Marissa in the hall at school, and she shys away. He is obviously confused, but Marissa changes the subject to his visit to Miami. He asks her if anything happened while he was gone, and she says nothing happened. They plan to get together later and she leaves with a kiss on his cheek.

Kirsten receives a gift from Carter's office. It's a seahorse necklace.

Zach and Summer talk in the hall. He wondered what was going to happen between them. She tells him that it was both a revenge kiss and something more. Seth comes up and calls Zach a horrible person. Zach tells Seth that he is quitting the comic because Summer means more to him then the comic. Summer leaves. Seth tells Zach he sees his evil plan. Zach says, "Wake up. I'm a water polo player. We're never nice guys." Zach and Seth go to war for Summer.

Trey shows up at Harbor High, and Summer finds Marissa watching him from behind a tree. She asks Summer for a ride. She lies about a left book in the school and has Summer pick her up behind the school.

Sandy and Kirsten are talking in the kitchen. Sandy wants to go out for dinner with Kirsten, but she says she is too busy. She Sandy sees the seahorse necklace. She says she bought it at the Featherbrook gift shop.

Zach tells Reed he plans on backing out of the comic book. She angrily tells him that he signed a contract and unless he wants to deal with lawsuits, he'll stay. Zach accuses Seth of this argument.

Julie delivers a package to Caleb at his office and asks that they see a counselor. He agrees. She leaves. Caleb looks at pictures or Julie and her "affair."

Kirsten calls Carter, but gets the voicemail. She thanks him for the necklace, then apologies for calling and hangs up.

Jess tries to make a move on Ryan, but he denies her. Ryan discovers Trey hassling Marissa in the parking lot. They fake that everything is alright and Ryan gets suspicious.

Kirsten is passed out on the couch, an empty glass on the floor. Sandy discovers her and takes her to her bed. The next day he confronts her about her drinking problem and asks her if it's because Carter left. She leaves angrily.

Seth is using the comic book club to spy on Summer and Zach. Summer finds out that Zach didn't quit the comic book.

Ryan goes to talk to Trey at his job about why Marissa is being so weird. He says he doesn't know why. As Ryan leaves, he runs into Jess who hints at Trey being obsessed with Marissa.

Summer is erasing all evidence of Cohen from her life. She discovers the bruise on Marissa's chest. Marissa says she fell. Summer realizes it was all Reed's fault that this fight between her and Seth started. She leaves to seek payback.

Julie confronts Kirsten about her failing relationship with Sandy and her alcohol addiction. She tells Julie that she felt that she and Sandy had a wall come between them. Carter made her feel less alone, and now he's gone.

Summer visits Reed at a comic store and accuses her of manipulating Seth and threatening Zach. Reed offers Summer a spectacular career. Summer knows she's being manipulated, but doesn't care.

Ryan and Marissa are make out before going to the Seth's comic book launch. While she does it, she keeps seeing Trey's face on Ryan. She jumps up and says she can't do this. She storms out.

Sandy confronts Kirsten about whether she had an affair with Carter. She tells him she didn't.

Seth is at his comic book launch telling his audience about the book. Reed interrupts his hour-long speech. She introduces Summer dressed as Little Miss Vixen.

Julie receives divorce papers from Caleb. He shows her the photos. He tells her he knows about her affair with Luke. He gives her a week to move herself and Marissa out. He also fires her.

Seth pulls Summer away from her photo shoot and apologizes to her for everything that happened in Miami. He gets on his knees and begs. Zach arrives and they start physically fighting. Summer interrupts them. She says she chooses neither of them.

Marissa is crying on her bed when Trey enters unannounced. He apologizes, and Marissa refuses to accept it. He asks her not to tell Ryan what happened. She yells at him to get out or she'll call the cops. He leaves. Ryan arrives at her house and sees Trey leaving.

Kirsten is drinking at a bar. She pays and leaves the necklace behind. She calls Sandy and apologizes. She drops her phone and nearly hits a car. In the intersection she's plowed down by a semi.
