The Shoppes at Gateway Park

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Shoppes at Gateway Park is a proposed outdoor shopping mall, to be located in the city of Detroit, Michigan, United States. The complex will be located at the southeast corner of 8 Mile Road (M-102) and Woodward Avenue (M-1), near the Michigan State Fair complex. Construction on the mall will begin in Spring 2008; when completed, it will include more than forty inline tenants.[1] JCPenney will be the mall's anchor store; its opening will provide the city of Detroit with its first full-line department store in nearly ten years.[1]

[edit] Development

The Shoppes at Gateway Park will be an outdoor shopping mall with approximately 330,000 square feet (30,658.0 ) of retail space.[1] Originally, construction on the property was slated to begin in March of 2007; however, Chicago, Illinois-based General Growth Properties, the mall's developer, has delayed groundbreaking on the mall until Spring 2008, in order to secure the interest of prospective tenants.[1]

In March of 2007, JCPenney has signed a letter of interest to be included as an anchor store of the complex.[2] This JCPenney will be the first full-line department store within Detroit's city limits since the closure of a Crowley's on Grand Boulevard in 1999.[1][3]

More than forty other retailers will be part of the complex, including five big box stores and five restaurants.[1] Another proposed feature of the mall is a special training center, in which General Growth plans to train employees on various retailing skills.[4]

At a December 2007 meeting, Detroit City Council members held a meeting to approve a special tax status regarding the mall's construction.[5]
