The Shire is located in the village of Carleton, Nova Scotia, Canada.

The Shire is situated upon 165 acres of land in Yarmouth County, fronting Mink Lake. The land is a mixture of streams, meadow, wetland and Acadian forest. There are a series of interconnected hiking trails, gardens, organic agriculture and environmentally sustainably constructed facilities and sports activities for groups.

The purpose of The Shire is to be a gathering ground for the study and practice of how to build a sustainable human future.

The Shire is notable for its hosting of diverse ideological guests, including "The Berkana Institute","Pioneers of Change" and, annually "The Art of Hosting" (AOH). It serves as a neutral ground for the exploration of all possibilities that any can offer.

The Shire houses the Split Rock Learning Centre Association (SRLCA). The SRLCA is a non-profit organization offering a wide range of local and international programs that support community building, youth leadership, personal development and rural livelihood.

The combined interests of the Split Rock Learning Center and The Shire are to constantly be developing appropriate and sustainable practices for the present and the future. The Discovery and Practice Ground is an open forum to participate in, develop and discover alternative ways of living. Some of their current projects are: organic gardening, permaculture, alternative education, sustainable building, water catchment systems, dry composting/ waste management, upcycling/recycling, social entrepreneurship, creative arts and traditional crafts.

The Split Rock Learning Center offers residential and non-residential programs throughout the year in the local community, and at the Shire in Carleton Village in the summer and fall. The SRLC programs offer training in a wide variety of areas including youth leadership, community development, entrepreneurship, trades skills, sustainable landscaping/gardening and personal growth. Each of these focus areas is a doorway to people building meaningful relationships to the land, themselves and others, that lead to positive actions in their lives.

The Shire also features a guest commons, specifically the Banyard, for meals and functionary duties, the fire-pit for bonfires and collective enjoyment and the campground for guests. The Shire has a complete shower/lavatory facility on grounds using on-site resources and recycling. The Shire also hosts occasional outdoor movies on large screen format. Previous years have shown "Chinatown" by Roman Polanski, "The Seven Samurai" by Kurosawa and "V for Vendetta" by the Wachowski Brothers.

The Shire campground, meeting spaces and facilities are available for hire and functions.

There are hiking trails all through the 165 acres of land and access to Mink Lake. The birds, plants and wildlife abound for those eager to explore and watch. There are firepits and benches all over the property and many places to sit, relax and enjoy nature. Many people who come pray, practice meditation, yoga and many other spiritual forms on the land - feeling nature supports and enhances their experience and connection. There is the opportunity and facility for various sports: badminton, horseshoes, volleyball, canoeing, swimming in the lake, fishing, cross country skiing, running ... and don't forget to walk the Labyrinth!

Unique to most venues, The Shire offers a 26ft diameter Yurt. The Yurt can seat 55 people around the perimeter in a circle, up to 80 in a traditional theatre seating and up to 50 in banquet seating arrangement. The yurt is heated with a woodstove, has electric power points, and lighting for the evenings. The floor is a handmade coconut husk matting - dry and comfortable for all types of meeting.

A 20ft by 30ft white canvass Marquee is located near all the facilities and their yurt. Mostly used as an eating area the marquee can also be converted into a meeting room. The marquee offers carpeted floors, or grass as needed. The walls are removable and it has electric power points and lighting for the evenings.
