The Secret of the Grain (French: La Graine et le Mulet) is a 2007 Franco-Tunisian award-winning feature film by Abdel Kechiche.

The French title of the film refers to a "grain of couscous" and a "mullet," a type of fish, both popular in Tunisian cooking.

[edit] Plot

Slimane Beiji is a sixty year-old shipyard worker living in Sète, a Mediterranean port city in France, with a dream of someday opening a couscous and fish restaurant. He lives with his lover, Latifah, a hotel owner and her daughter, Rym. However, he remains very close to his children and to his ex-wife, Souad, with whom he shares delicious weekly meals and discusses life.

Slimane’s dreams seem dashed when he finds himself unemployed. Financial difficulties and a sense of failure mount. An old boat is found, ideal for his restaurant plans, and Slimane engages the help of his two families and his friends to realize his vision.
