The Scout Association of Papua New Guinea started in 1926. Papua New Guinean Scouting was originally a section of Scouts Australia, and joined the World Organization of the Scout Movement in 1976. It had a membership of 2811 in 2001.

The Scout program requires all members to have a good understanding of their own local customs and traditions, as well as those of the other regions.
