The Rude Awakening Show

The Rude Awakening Show is an international morning show that currently airs from 6am until 10am weekdays on WOCM, a radio station based out of Ocean City, MD and worldwide at www.Irieradio.com. It's hosted by Chicago-bred, but world traveled, radio personality David "Bulldog" Rothner. The radio show premiered on WOCM on January 10th, 2005-- it had formerly run on St. Maarten radio outlet Laser 101 for about 6 years. The studios for the current show are located above a Tiki bar at Seacrets, a famous bar, restaurant and nightclub in Ocean City. Because of its' location on the Delmarva peninsula the show can be heard in four states: Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and New Jersey.

On January 10th, 2006, James Mathias, then mayor of Ocean City, presented Bulldog and the Rude Awakening staff and WOCM a proclamation designating January 10th as Bulldog Day. A small-scale parade down Coastal Highway is being discussed for the 2008 Bulldog Day.

Bulldog and the Rude Awakening Show with Bulldog debuted in Ocean City on January 10th, 2005. The show features a variety of guest interviews from celebrities to politicians, musicians to athletes, psychics to porn stars, doctors and artists, and all interesting, poignant and oddball characters in between. The Rude Awakening Show is a great positive morning show. Most of the content and interviews are upbeat and the host "Bulldog" keeps things moving rather quickly. The result is a morning show that has a rare intensity and positive vibe. Broadcasting from atop the Jamaican themed Seacrets Entertainment Complex and their in house "Best of Rock" 98.1 FM Radio Station. The sunny atmosphere and good time going on at the beach club below creates a constantly fun and social environment that really shows in the programming on the mother station WOCM Irieradio.com on the bay in Ocean City Maryland. The show also has regular features from adult webmaster Mr. Skin, Drew Curtis from FARK.com, and movie reviews from Chicago based critic Rory "Rorsky" Jobst. For local listeners the show features daily surf reports from Lee at Malibus Surf Shop and summertime fishing updates from Captain Mark Radcliffe that have become critical for the fishing communities in the surrounding areas. .

The cast of the show has varied since its premiere. In addition to Bulldog, the show currently features:

  • Billy "The Dude" Todd (sidekick/stunt boy)A surfer native from the Ocean City Maryland area who plays in an about to be huge band called The Lower Class Citizens his frequent tribulation and hilarious observation lend the show a unique perspective.
  • Phonegirl (Operator, Show Coordinator) Phonegirl makes the occassional in studio appearance and adds her two cents to the conversations and interviews.
  • Leighton Moore (station owner)frequently makes appearances and calls in.
  • Brian "The Dice" Smith. Resident IT guy, who is a genius in all things technical. Brian Smith is said to have killed a full grown grizzly bear with a ninja sword when he was a child.(He is definitley not editing this Wiki right now)
  • Moore's friends Gary Frick and Dave, who participate in a Friday segment called "Moore, Frick and Dave." Which tends to be the high point of the week as all three are very funny and tend to bring chaos wherever they go

Bulldog frequently points out that, although the show is considerably toned down from the "anything goes" atmosphere of his FCC-free St. Maartens show, he boasts the variety of topics and interviews can offer something for everyone and that the show has always been about the listeners and welcomes callers to participate.

The show tends to refrain from stunts on the scale of Opie and Anthony and Mancow Muller, but it has had its moments. With co-hosts "Dice","The Dude" and occassional hilarious appearances by "Phonegirl." The show has evolved into a fast paced positive, upbeat, morning show. Many zany antics have resulted in "The Dude" getting arrested.

  • On September 14th, 2007 the show ran a record hour and twenty minutes over schedule after the Dude and John Smith were hypnotized. Many callers, message board posters and emailers said that day's show was a high point in the Ocean City run.
  • After being thrown out of a 7-11 while dressed up as a nude Cupid, a St. Patrick's Day parade confrontation with police led to the Dude being legally prohibited from entering any Maryland 7-11.
  • The apex of a long-running feud between the Dude and newsman John Smith resulted in a go-kart race-- the loser of which had to have their head shaved by the owner, Leighton Moore. The Dude won and Smith's head was shaved on-air.
  • After hearing that a Maryland judge had ruled that mooning someone was not illegal, Bulldog forced Dude to stand on the median of Coastal Highway pantsless, with Ocean 98 bumper stickers on his rear end.
  • A milk-drinking contest nearly resulted in the hospitalization of two Seacrets kitchen workers.
