The River Niger is a play by Joseph A. Walker. It is set in Harlem and has an all black cast. It opened on Broadway on March 27, 1973 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, and ran to November 24, 1973. It won a 1974 Tony Award for Best Play. Two of the performers, Douglas Turner Ward and Roxie Roker, were nominated for Best Featured Actor and Best Featured Actress, respectively. Walker won a 1973 Drama Desk Award for Most Promising Playwright.
