The Revenge of the Shadow King is the first volume of three books in the Grey Griffins series written in collaborative writing by American authors Derek Benz and J.S. Lewis, and published by Orchard Books, an imprint of Scholastic Inc. The book follows the story of four friends who form The Order of the Grey Griffin.

Max Sumners and his friends/other members of the Order of the Grey Griffin. Max is the son of a divorced rich woman who owns Avalon Minnesota. Max and his friends play a magical card game by the name of Round Table and are mentored by by Olaf Iverson, a grand master Round Table card game and a member of the Templar Grand Council. One day while playing Round Table, the Griffins find out that Max's grandfather has been killed in a mysterious accident. That night, Max has dinner with his grandmother and discovers that his grandfather was the guardian of an ancient book, an honor passed down through the generations. And that he is a descendant of Templar Knights and he discovers that the King of Shadows' portal has entered Earth. The Griffins destroys the portal and continue to unfold the mysteries of the Templar Knights.
