"The Red and the Black" is the fourteenth episode of season 5 of the television series The X-Files. With Cassandra Spender missing, and her son Jeffrey angrily attempting to push his way up in the FBI, Mulder has Scully put under hypnosis to learn the truth. The Syndicate, meanwhile, quicken their tests for the alien vaccine, sacrificing their own to do so.

- The title of this episode is taken from Le Rouge et le Noir, a novel by the French writer Stendhal. Also, music group Blue Öyster Cult has a song with the same name.
