The Red Balloon Learner Centres, often referred to as the Red Balloon, are specialist learner centres in Cambridge, Harrow and Norwich, England, providing a safe full-time learning environment for children aged eleven to sixteen who have been so badly bullied they are unable to attend mainstream schools. It is a registered charity.
On the 14 March 2008 an appeal to set up a new learner centre in Merseyside in memory of James Bulger was launched by Denise Fergus, his mother, and Esther Rantzen. [1][2][3][4]
[edit] General information
Redballoon has been successful for many years, however a report that was leaked during 2006, has badly affected the schools reputation. The leaked report hit local and then National media (TV and radio) and has indicated that teaching was not up to the required level, that the children were given little support and a detrimental environment for the children was allowed. Carrie a senior teacher at the school has worked to improve the situation, but many of the children have left early not being able to cope with the environment and pressure that is placed on them.
The main aims of the Red Balloon are to
- restore self-confidence
- teach students how to respond to bullying
- help students regain control of their learning and succeed
- help students return as soon as possible to mainstream education or to find worthwhile employment
- encourage and expect consideration and respect at all times.
