The Purple Star

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Purple Star, or 'Starp' as it is otherwise known, is a group of student activists operating within Oxford University and Oxford Brookes University, aimed at promoting left-wing agenda in a manner that has been likened by some students as 'anarchist'. Although the group's political views can appear confusing owing to their shadowy nature, it is believed that they share broad sympathies with the Industrial Workers of the World and prominent thinkers in the vein of Noam Chomsky.

The group's membership and methods of recruitment are a closely guarded secret that have provoked no small amount of curiosity, among the student body (particularly past members of OUSU, the Oxford University Student Union) and certain members of staff at both universities within the city charged with the implementation of disciplinary action.

Recent activities include the aiding of a break-in into the Oxford Union in order to perform a piano-playing stunt in the Union building during the Irving-Griffin controversy[1], and the incitement of various protesters during an animal rights demonstration[2].
