The Pirates of Penzance is a 1983 film, based on Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta. It stars Kevin Kline (as The Pirate King), Angela Lansbury, Linda Ronstadt, and Tilly Vosburgh.

Frederick, played by Rex Smith, makes a request to his maid that he become an apprentice for a pilot, but she misunderstands, and he becomes an apprentice for a pirate. When his service is finished, he decides to leave the Pirates of Penzance, and he agrees to take his maid with him. But before he can, he falls in love with Mabel (played by Rondstadt), and falls back on his promise to his made. Before he can leave, he must do in the pirates, but, though they are not the fiercest of pirates, they believe that can best him. As it turns out, Frederick has not abandoned entirely his pirate duties.
